Forum Spam Issues

Simon SmithSimon Smith BannedBanned User Posts: 49
As well as updating the forum software this afternoon I have also added measures to stop the spam threads and private messages that have been annoying users for some time.

The forum will now require an answer to a simple question upon registering that should fool automated forum bots.

If you see any advertisement threads or recieve any private messages please notify me. There is a slight chance that a bot that has already registered before the update may post a thread but that should be a rare occurrence.

Once again, thanks to those users who have assisted by reporting the spam threads, it is most appreciated.

Simon

Ive noticed someone selling viagra on the boards. Just to let ya know. Looks like they are based in the Phillipines. If you could investigate that would be much appreciated.

How is it the spammers find it so easy to post on the forum and yet members often have problems? I'm referring to the ease in which a "pharmacy" is able to advertise it's wares today

Spammers are as much members as you or I and ultimately it's impossible to stop someone registering and posting spam without making posting harder for everyone. Spam happens and all you can do is take reasonable precautions to stop it.

I'm more concerned about the slowness of the admins to delete this stuff, do they ever look at the forums or the reports people send? I'm getting really tired of moaning at them, why can't these people do their fecking jobs?

  • The forum should really be open to those who have a membership number. You can't get into the CIMA forums until you enter a membership number. This will stop SPAM.

For me, the annoyance isn't that the spammers are still getting through but rather that the admins chose to sing their own praises without (apparently) resolving the issue.

I'd suggest that all newly registered users have their first few posts moderated and are not allowed to send PMs until they've posted in the forums.
