AAT research has shown that while larger businesses in the UK pay £100m on tax compliance each year, small-medium enterprises (SMEs) spend £9.9bn.

During the survey SMEs told AAT that the tax system creates an uneven playing field, and makes it more difficult for smaller businesses to compete in the marketplace.

AAT Chief Executive Mark Farrar said: "It is a strong indicator of just how hard dealing with tax can be when 80% of our members, experts at navigating through the intricacies of tax compliance, state that the UK tax system is too complicated."
