Hi, I passed Technician in June this year and am currently working as an Accounts Payable Assistant, I finding it very difficuit to gain another position due to my lack of experience, so I have decided to volunteer as a Treasurer, but was wondering would I need imdemnity insurance to do so????

Any info is apprecaited.

    Hi Jenni

Logic would dictate (in my eyes at least!) that if you do something for no monetary gain, then if you do it wrong, there is no come-back!

However, I would send an email to member services at AAT to confirm this.

If you do need PI, you can always join the AAT block scheme which covers people with a fee income of less than £5K and costs about £50-ish.

Sorry I couldn't give you a definitive answer though.

    Hi

I checked whether I could use my letters to sign some accounts that I checked and the answer was 'yes' but the person in the AAT that I spoke to strongly suggested I get liability insurance even though it was voluntary and no money was involved. When I was the PTA treasurer we were covered under our NCPTA insurance which covered any liability for treasurers, that might be worth checking out.

However having said that, I thought that for a duty of care to be owed - money had to change hands!

That was the AAT advice and I am just an ordinary member - not a member in practice.

    Hi Claudia/Annette,

Thanx to both of you for your advise, I think I shall ask the Charity if their insurance cover volunteers, if not I think it may be a good idea for me to organise the insurance myself ....as a precautionary measure, as it will be the first time I would have put my knowledge into practice, working in Accs Payable just isn't the same.

    Thanx again
