Just back online after a few problems changing server:
I returned to work after the new year to find another enquiry on my desk. This time a pub, but the landlord is a "bad payer" of his tax. Does anyone find that the bad payers are picked on more - or is this just a coincidence? :?

Re:HMRC Enquiries
With CIS subbies, if they're late paying the tax, their status can be reviewed and down-graded.

Re:HMRC Enquiries
Yes, I can understand that one. Do you think that applies to everyone?0 -
Re:HMRC Enquiries
Quite possibly. 'non-compliance' is a very comprehensive statement - with heavy penalties.0 -
Re:HMRC Enquiries
I can understand the logic of "picking" on bad payers - if they cannot afford or be "bovvered" to pay their tax on time - is that how they treat the rest of their business affairs.
I also think (not entirely sure) that I have read somewhere that 2 late tax returns = enquiry.

Re:HMRC Enquiries
As a matter of interest how many enquiries to you handle each year?0 -
Re:HMRC Enquiries
In 5 years, I have only ever had an aspect enquiry - client hadn't told me about 5p interest on a savings account - and it was picked up!
Fingers crossed

Mmm. I have had more than that. Perhaps it is the types of businesses I handle? Any one else?0
