Tiscali broadband

Hey all
We're moving into our new place on Sat and need to think about which broadband provider to use.
Where we are moving to is a fairly new estate in a large development where building is still going on and I think we only have several providers in the area - BT and Tiscali.
Tiscali is the cheaper and better value option with unlimited usage at ΓΒ£14.99 a month - does anyone have this? How do you find it?

Re:Tiscali broadband
Tiscali Internet is very much a case of "you get what you pay for"
If you are upgrading from dial-up then you won't notice how slow your speeds are during peak hours (evenings) and you will be very pleased with Tiscali. If you pay for their "up to" 2MB broadband you will be very lucky to get speeds of 1MB. For me that's fast enough.
However, if you play games online and need fast speeds then give Tiscali a miss. If you fileshare then also give Tiscali a miss as they do not like you doing anything that uses alot of bandwidth.
Personally I have no complaints at all and Tiscali are very cheap in comparison to other ISP's. We have the phone package too and it's very cheap.
If you would like to know anything else then just ask.

Re:Tiscali broadband
I have a phone and broadband package with plusnet.
My hubby chose them because they come top every time in the best broadband buys and we've not been unhappy at all!
Their customer service is good and although our speeds sometimes drop it's a BT problem not Plusnet.
They are always really good at explaining the problems in laymans terms too.

Re:Tiscali broadband
DONT USE TISCALI FOR Bleeeeep SAKE!!!
I used these and their customer service is a joke, they can't speak english and their answer to every query over the phone (* see below) was to Restore the PC to a previous date!
* You will be on the phone for an average 30 minutes a time being passed from pillar to post.
I eventualy cancelled with them when I moved house, 3 months later they were still taking direct debit payments (and the contract was finished)!!!
I phoned them loads of times and even sometimes after 50 minutes of waiting I just hung up. The payments stopped coming out of my account 4 months after I cancelled and I am yet to get a rebate (although when I spoke to them last they said it was on it's way)... Terrib;e and shocking, and I found the Browsing very slow compared to who I am with now (ntl) - can't grumble at that, I get d/l speeds of 2MB per second through some sites and their customer service is pretty good.
Argh, ramble over - sorry for putting a dampner on things, but I had a terrible time with Tiscali - plus, they don't offer much in return - just a browsing experience - their home page is crap!

Re:Tiscali broadband
My partner works for BT and he would tell you DON'T GET BT BROADBAND. It sucks, apparantly.
We use tiscali. The boyfriend loves it because it's unlimited and uncapped so he can download as much as he likes at 8MB. And it's cheaper, as you know.

Re:Tiscali broadband
I love broadband!
I produce a couple of local magazines and it would take forever to download all the articles and photos that I receive.
I'm BT/Virgin.

Re:Tiscali broadband
Thanks for the comments guys.
We only have a choice of BT or Tiscali and Tiscali is cheaper with more for your money, so guess we will go for that one!
We only want it for normal surfing, checking e-mail etc. - no games online or anything, so hopefully it will be enough.
However my partner needs to work from home sometimes and connects to his work network by VPN..... it works on the BT connection in our current place, so it should work ok in the new place!0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
I have BT broadband and have never had any problems.
The online help function is very useful, the connection speed always high and has never let me down.

Re:Tiscali broadband
Thought I'd make a recommendation to the person who is trying to get their money back from Tiscali. Put a complaint in to the Internet Service Providers Association.
I did this with Orange because I moved from Orange to BT in September and Orange started telling me I still owed them money but refused to let me have an invoice or let me see a copy of my account. I ended up reporting them to the Internet Service Providers and eventually Orange admitted they had allocated someone elses account to mine and have agreed to pay me compensation for all the time I wasted.
I know someone that has Tiscali and is currently trying to move away from them to BT but they are having problems as Tiscali will not provide a MAC code.
I've had BT Broadband for 5 months now and never had any problems, but I do know others with BT that do have problems, so I guess it's all down to luck with any broadband provider!!0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
Thanks Sue - i'll definitely look into that!0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
Message for Sue02:
Here's how to get your MAC code from Tiscali even if you are in the first year of your contract.
Download as mych stuff as you can between 6pm & 11pm (Tiscali peak hours) and even though their BB is "unlimited" you will get a Fair Usage Policy warning.
Carry on downloading stuff during peak hours and you will get another one soon after the first one.
Still carry on and you will be Fupped, which means that you are put on Tiscali's bad boy pipe with crap download speeds. However, you will also get an offer from Tiscali of you MAC code as they will no longer want your business.0 -

Kevin - that had us rolling up - thanks for that - what a fantastic idea, I guess this was through experience!

Re:Tiscali broadband
Two things I do when I have a serious disagreement with a company and no longer wish to be with them;
1) Cancel the direct debit immediately. Even if I change my mind, I can just set up a new one and nothing makes them pay more attention than when they can't get your money and their customer service suddenly improves a hundred fold.
2) Threaten to start invoicing them for my wasted time, generally ΓΒ£25 per letter I may need to write. I've even threatened them with counter-court action for non-provision of service when things have got really heavy. For such a hollow threat, it's surprsing how often this works.
My broadband is with NTL and I had a problem with a crashing modem up until Christmas. This had been ongoing since October and they swore it wasn't the modem. I disagreed. So I deliberately broke it apart on Boxing Day and told them I was cancelling. I had a brand new one within days which I refused to pay for and it's been fine since.
Maybe not actions I would recommend for anyone else unless you possess a tenacious and accept no crap attitude like myself!

Re:Tiscali broadband
Hi Kevin
Thanks for that idea. They have cancelled their subscription with Tiscali altogether as they are outstanding the contract, so I'll see if that works first!

Re:Tiscali broadband
I currently work for PIPEX!
Customer service was really bad a while ago but it's a lot better now.
Just do not get confused between PIPEX Internet and PIPEX Homecall.
Oh the complications......0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
For unlimited downloads and I think it's 8Mb, can't remember now, I use Sky Broadband at ΓΒ£10/month.
Conditions are you have to have Sky Digital and to be subscribed to a premium channel package such as Sky Movies. But you get the router and all that installed for nothing.
You can get it cheaper but you get lower megabytes and you have to pay way over the odds for installation.0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
If you have Sky Digital Malcolm, it's no wonder you don't get out of bed until late with all those Quiz and shopping channels available!
I pay ΓΒ£24.99 per month for my unlimited 4mb NTL broadband and just make do with a Freeview box which only gives me a mere five or six flaming quiz channels.
No wonder they're so eager to give you a free ΓΒ£40 router and installation when your expenditure is probably ΓΒ£500 per year minimum though! Funny how you can disguise a bargain!

Re:Tiscali broadband
QVC, Ideal World - top channels!
As for quizzes, you can't beat a bit of bully.0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
I've been with Virgin.net for quite a while. Not the cheapest but at least they don't lock you in to a 12 month contract. Never had any problems with them either for business or personal use.0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
I wish my expenditure with NTL was that low... I pay ΓΒ£78 a month for the Phone Line (Free calls anytime for under 1 hour) to a lindline ofc, with a connection fee ofc, 2MB Unlimited Broadband and TV Package.
CJC, Virgin are merging with NTL in June, you may want to check to see if you will be affected by the merge? I know my broadband goes up by a staggering 1 penny a month.0 -
Re:Tiscali broadband
Holy crap Jamie, ΓΒ£78 per month?! My broadband is double your speed, I use/carry a USB internet phone so don't have to pay a fixed monthly line rental, my Freeview box hasn't cost me anything since it was bought a year ago, and my contract mobile costs ΓΒ£25.00 per month for unlimited internet and 300 minutes/texts.
