has anyone else had clients mysteriously vanish from their online lists these past few days? I'm not even going to attempt to ring the online services (un)help desk before the end of the month though! back to paper.... grrrr

Re:Missing clients - why NOW?!!
Oh yes - they come and go at the whims of the Revenue elves - in particular with partnerships. I have got 3 husband and wife partnerships (all with 64-8s in place) where one of the partners has vanished.
I wish that I could say it was super-natural goings on, but it isn't - just pure incompetence

shoot the elves! all of them!
well it's strange that you say your problems are with partnerships - my missing clients are a husband and wife (Ltd Co though, not in partnership) and they've both vanished.
Luckily I found one of those lovely letters in the wife's file saying she doesn't need to submit any further returns, but I've just had a go at submitting the husband's return without a 64-8 in place and it seems to have gone through alright. I got a message saying 'this return may be rejected as no 64-8 is in place' but then I got the usual 'submission sucessful' message. I thought afterwards I should have scanned a copy of the 64-8 and attached it. too late now!
Has anyone else filed returns like this? did they get rejected at a later date?

Hi Jodie
What system are you using? I have submitted loads of returns online without 64-8s and never had a problem - or that message - please don't start to worry me at this late stage
Nearly there now - 3 waiting for signing and one guy in hospital, so here comes the fine and tough!!

PS - just need to spend all of February getting the little tykes to pay me.......
oh - and all the other things that I have put off for the past 10 months - anyone want to start a list

Re:Missing clients - why NOW?!!
I just use HMRC's own software - fingers crossed it'll be OK. I do feel better knowing you've done it before!
I've got 4 left - one's nearly finished but he only dropped the missing bank statements in a few days ago. He's got no tax to pay so I'm not too worried.
One new one who promised me everything was in order & it wasn't, so I've told him it's unlikely that I'll get it done in time. I think it'll get finished though.
One who was so proud of getting everything in order for me but he neglected to keep an eye on his turnover like I'd told him to and I have a feeling he should be VAT registered by now  he only dropped his stuff of last week but has been hassling me all morning.
and one strange man who's supposedly a subbie but didn't do any work in 2005/06 :? I think he's still expecting to get tax relief for 'use of home as office'!
Clients - you gotta love 'em!
PS: i've got a lovely little line in my letter saying 'please note that your tax return will not be submitted to HRMC until I have received full payment of my invoice'
it works!

Re:Missing clients - why NOW?!!
Hi Jodie
Have just come across this on HMRC website:Agents
If you are an agent and you are using HMRC’s own software, your clients must be present on the client list at the Government Gateway to enable you to access, complete and submit the Self Assessment Tax Return on your client’s behalf.
If you are an agent and you are using Commercial software to create and file Self Assessment Tax Returns you will be able to do so without your client being present on your Government Gateway client list.
You can still file your clients' returns online using commercial software without the need to complete a 64-8 authority.
This might explain your problems......

Re:Missing clients - why NOW?!!
Thanks, but that's just confused me more!
I WAS able to access and complete and (possibly?!) submit his return.
I wonder if that's because he's still maybe on my list with Government Gateway and he's just fallen off the list at HMRC :? that's normally what happens when they go missing isn't it?0
