Very very worried.....

I'm currently in month 5 of my 6 month probationary period in my new job. I had my annual review last week and all was well.

This morning I have seen my exact job advertised on the internet dated 31/01/07.

There hasn't been any talk of adding anyone new to our team and the ad lists my exact job role down to the names of the tasks I perform.

What do I do?!?!

As I am still in probation, they only have to give me 2 weeks notice if they decide not to keep me on.

I can't afford to lose my job as my boyfriend and I have just got a place together.

I don't know whether or not to challenge my manager and ask what's going on or just start looking for something else pronto!

They told me they were happy and thought I was doing well in my review!

I think you will be fine, they are not necessarily going to discuss new positions with you when you have only been there a few months. I wouldnt worry.

But it's my exact job description and if they were looking for someone else, I would be involved and know about it.

    It's not good.

I'm not sure whether to say something or not - it's really unfair if they are going behind my back!

You are jumping to conclusions. Im not saying its impossible, but its very rare people will lie to you point blank by saying they are happy with you when they are not. If they were just not saying anything at all then Id be worried, but having had a good review, I cant see that they would be pushing you out

You could look at it from an alternative angle, in that they may be so pleased with you that you could be due an imminent promotion and your old role needs filling.

    Regards,

There is nowhere for me to be promoted to though. I've done ok, but I've not done anything spectacular enough to get a promotion either.

Not saying that this is necessarily the case, but since it's an internet advert, are you absolutely sure that it's a new ad and not just the old one still hanging around from a while ago, cached on a server? In much the same way that some employment agencies will continue to post certain vacancies long after they have been filled?

And you could be getting an assistant since senior management will rarely keep you informed of tactical or strategical decisions anyway.

Rob has a good point, my position is stil advertised on the agency website and I first applied for it in October 2006 and was offered the position in Novemberish, I started January and it's still advertised.

Yeah I guess so, but it wasn't there a few weeks ago and it is dated 31.01.07.

If we were getting anyone new in, I would defintitely know about it.

Just seems very odd that it's my exact role - guess I will just have to sit tight and see what happens, impressing everyone for the next few weeks!

Not very nice to see though....

I haven't checked - kinda busy... (Yeah I know, I am here) but I would expect there to be some employment law covering advertising an occupied post without informing the occupee.

Will have to ask my friend who works in HR (for another company)!

While I may be wrong here I wouldn't have thought it against the law, however it wouldn't be good strategy should the employee later decide to claim for constructive dismissal...

Plus you could be getting het up about nothing because that's exactly what it could be - nothing. I know peace of mind is currently hard to come by Jo, however, it really wouldn't be a good idea to go into your line manager all guns blazing over what really could just be a simple administrative error.

AND there's no easy way to tell your boss, why is my job advertised on the web, because she could turn round and say well why have you been looking for another job.... in wrk time.

She said she doesn't think there is any law, but it could be classed as displacement - whatever that means!

I plucked up the courage to ask my dept. manager - I said a fellow AAT studying friend had seen the ad and asked if I knew anything about it, then had a bit of a shock when I read it and it seemed to be my job!

He said it is prob just c*ck up at recruitment agency and I've got nothing to worry about. Still slightly suspicious though - won't feel 100% sure until my probation ends now!! :-)
