Re:Comedy
Although comedy has moved on from the Tommy Cooper days, it doesn't need to be crude to be funny. Watching old re-runs of the aforementioned comic, much of it is excruciatingly dated and really not as we remember it from when we were younger. Just like old Dr Who.
However, The Young Ones and Alexi Sayle - although much cruder than other comics on the scene at the time - also haven't dated too well, proving that crude doesn't equate to funny or memorable. Fawlty Towers and Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em are extremely funny even now and didn't rely on swearing.
You can also be "over-crude" and have no comedy at all a la Russell Brand. Ricky Gervais used to be funny until he got stuck up his own arse and forgot that he's not the one writing his gags.

I hate giving things up for Lent.

Re:Comedy
Well, if you tried writing more than a few random words here and there Helen, you might make a few errors too! And I do edit after I see them!
Unless pedants copy and paste them first of course!

Re:Comedy
Well he does write his own gags alongside Merchant.
Russel brand is funny if you take the time to listen to him on the radio. Have you seen his stand up?
I dont agree that Frank Spencer is funny after ten minutes worth.

Re:Comedy
I think that Dads Army is one of the most timeless comedy series ever written.
Perhaps because it was set in a past era?
Frank Spencer was very funny, but has dated and I think that has taken its toll on some of the humour.
Fawlty Towers has dated too - but still retains the humour.
Luckily I haven't given up laughing for Lent.

Re:Comedy
Fawlty Towers is great, along with Only fools and horses.
I never got Last of the summer wine, I hate that programme. I also hate these new wave comedys like Two Pints
You still cant beat a bit of early Chubbs, when your talking stand up, I like a wide range of comedians. HATE Bill Bailey though0 -
Re:Comedy
I love Only Fools and Horses - classic!
Lee Evans is one of my favourite comedians, but I did notice that he swears more now - the wired and wonderful DVD is full of expletives!!

I didn't mean that - crude can be very funny but it needs a vital injection of wit or shock factor (depending on the situation) to make it so.
The only time I saw Russell Brand he was discussing Big Brother after the show. He was nothing but foul mouthed with no wit or shock factor present, just like a big kid with an ASBO and two bottles of Strongbow down his neck.

Re:Comedy
You cant judge him on that show, so many people do.
Thats why I asked.
Its like judging Dave Spikey on his performance in 8 out of ten cats0 -
Re:Comedy
I find Some Mothers... about as amusing as filling in my tax return
I still find The Young Ones funny, though I'll admit to there being a bit of nostalgia mixed in with that.
Anyway the clean/crude distinction is really a false dichotomy. Bill Hicks was as foul mouthed as they come but his comedy had the sort of moral rigour many so-called 'clean' comedians sadly lack.
Crude can indeed be very funny - but the best of those you don't see on the telly.0 -
