Re:Prince Harry
I know it's widely reported in the news that there's a chance he could be going to Iraq... also there's new of us pulling 1200 troops out at the end of the year and handing powers to iraqi officials.
If he does go, he will be there for only a few months, if that, which, may I say, is bad enough anyway...
In my opinion, Harry is the only worthwhile Royal about, he knows what a spliff is, he knows how to drink - i'm not saying I want the country to be ruled by a druggy alcoholic, but it helps that he's in touch with the real world... I don't do all this lah-de-dah bobbins, therefore I hope he doesn't go.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
apparently its been decided today that he will be going. I personally think its a bad idea, although it would be good for him to do it!0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Just out of interest who of us is royalist?0 -
Re:Prince Harry
not me! dont really see the point of them to be honest, so if someone can explain why we need them that would be great!0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Ditto0 -
Re:Prince Harry
not just me then0 -
Re:Prince Harry
All have a wee tiny piece of German Descendency... definitely not MY cup of tea.
I don't see the point in them either - the only one that matters right now is the queen cos it's her face on the frickin money....
I say vote my face to be on the money then there's no need for royal family!0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Now the Royle family - wouldnt be without them!0 -
Re:Prince Harry
As I've got older I've changed my tune about the royals and now I'd keep them. So many things have changed beyond recognition over the last twenty years that it's reassuring to maintain some familiarity and remind us of what it was once like to be proud to be British.
They now cost us next to nothing - 62p per person - and they more than earn their keep for the tourism industry or so we are told. Of course we could become just another faceless republic and have Tony Blair, Gordon Brown or any other thieving, lying politician as our president.
In an age of disrespect for all, I think it's good to see that the Royals - or at least the Queen - can still retain dignity in the face of great adversity.

Royals and dignity? :shock:0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Yes, they're not perfect but for the most part they do.
Or we could take modern day heroes like Robbie and Brittney, spend your forty or fifty quid on a concert ticket, make them famous by buying their records just so they can end up hating you for ruining their lives (yeah right!) before becoming total media whores willing to do anything to revive flagging careers.
Compared to that, yes the Royals are very dignified.

Re:Prince Harry
Queen Camilla?
Doesn't strike me as being too dignified.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Neither is her 'fella'
Im not against the royals, Im indifferent. I dont see any benefit to me, and yet no real hardship.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Quite impressed when I visited Windsor - tourism factor is definitely not to be sniffed at.
Queen - yes
Others? Not so sure.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
This tourism thing makes me question the logic. My dad paid to go and walk the Inca trail in Peru beacuse of the interesting history that surrounds the area, yet the tribe is no longer there.
Why do we think that the interest in our heritage would suddenly dissolve if a family moved out of a big house?0 -
Re:Prince Harry
You got me there!

Re:Prince Harry
I'd rather have Queen Camilla than Princess Brittney or King Robbie/Wayne. It's hard to keep heads held high when there's so much animosity - largely unjustified - towards you. The Royals cope quite well at that without needing to check into rehab at the slightest drop of a lost record sale.
There are also other implications regarding abolition such as royal agreement no longer being required to implement legislation. Okay, it might be largely academic but at least it's one last line of reason that President Tony would probably like to see removed.
Of course, tourism will be severely hit - it's short sighted to say that it wouldn't. Many Americans simply can't understand how we don't love our royals - we just take them for granted. For example, if you are in the trades that manufacture and sell royal goods you're inevitbaly going to suffer. London would also lose part of its status as a cultural city since it wouldn't be the pull for tourists that it once used to be.
If people are going to seriously vote for abolition at least have reasoned arguments for doing so other than saying there's "no point".

Re:Prince Harry
With respect Rob you havent answered my question with any proven argument, all you have done is provided a come back based on your opinion, which happens to conflict with mine. So we are both guilty if anything, of uninformed opinions, only as I said I really am indifferent.
And as far as passing legislation is concerned, that is about as likely as being hung for arson on the docks, which is still 'a rule' i believe.
Is it not true that if the queen overules parliament she is 'obliged' to abdicate?0 -
Re:Prince Harryblobbyh wrote:They now cost us next to nothing - 62p per person
Is that per week, month, annum or a one-off payment? And who exactly is included in the cost? The Queen only - or all the cousins etc.
Seems quite reasonable - but are there hidden costs for security etc.?
Where does the figure come from? Might be an interesting PEV/PCR assignment to break it down!

Re:Prince Harry
The only time members of the Royal family annoy me are when they make comments about being like the rest of us, eg, William & Harry were interviewed at christmas in Highgrove talking about having to cook at uni and wash clothes, PLEASE. They have no idea and never will, what it's like to be like the rest of us, I'd rather they didn't pretend.
I though it was Queen Camilla already????
As far as Harry going to Iraq, isn't what he is supposed to do, being in the armed forces? At some point in their careers, people in the forces serve abroad? I do feel concerned for the people serving under him as they could become just as much a target as he is and also it will cost the tax payer more as it will probably take another army to protect HIM...0 -
Re:Prince Harry
i just think that if the media hadnt made such a big deal out of Harry going then maybe he wouldnt be a target anyway, as no-one would know?!0 -
Re:Prince Harry
I dont think he is going to be an obvious target so to speak. They are not disclosing information about where his post is anyway.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
I'm not any more worried about PH going than any of our troops.
They're all at risk and all are potential targets.
It must be any family's worst nightmare to send off a loved one and then hear there's been a terrible incident.0 -
Re:Prince Harry
yeah but that could easily be leaked! it only has to be overheard in general conversation or something for that to get out0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Of course they are all at risk, I know that, I have two of my family serving.
Getting out of bed is a risk and any family could be told bad news at anytime. We cannot underestimate the intelligence some of these countries have, I believe ours to be the best in the world but that's just me being patriotic.

Re:Prince Harry
I used to be patriotic, but I dont know what 'British' is anymore0 -
Re:Prince Harry
Know what you mean Paul, I don't feel it as much as I used to but I do when it comes to our lads and lasses who serve this country, they have chosen that career path and I will give them my support regardless of whether it is right or wrong.
We do have to get the flag of St George out when England are playing rugby though

Re:Prince Harry
Yeah Ive alwys gone for 'English rather than British'
I have a huge respect for anyone who wants to go out and serve their country. I dont have respect for the people pulling the strings at the moment0
