Outlook Express - Help!

Can anyone explain how this can happen:

In Outlook Express:

Tools
Options
Connection

Why does a tick suddenly appear in the 'Hang up after sending and receiving' option?

This doesn't happen to me - but to someone else who keeps complaining that they aren't getting or able to send emails.

They swear that they don't change anything, but are they doing something else that is causing this to happen?

That i'm afraid I canot help you with.

Mine to says Hang up when finished with a manual send/receive and I have no problems... are you sure they are connected to the internet, or your network correctly.
If you're not connected to the server you won't be able to send e-mails... unless it's a stand-alone PC with internet connection.

Hopefully Chris can help you out a little.

    Sorry

It's just a stand alone PC.

Everything is fine for months and then I get a phone call saying they can't send or receive.

Now I know what to check - but it would obviously be better to prevent it.

    Thanks anyway!

    Chris - are you there?

I had a quick gander at this too...

Now, is it definitely the little tick box they might or might not have interfered with or something more serious like the POP3/SMTP settings? I would suspect the latter if they're having problems sending or receiving messages rather than something as innocuous as that usually innocent tick box.

Check under - Tools - Accounts - Mail - Properties - Servers. Also all the other guff like user name and passwords. Unfortunately, they'd need to know the original settings if they've been tampered with!

    Regards,

    Robert

Well, changing the tick normally works - and I don't think they know about the other.

    I will investigate further...

Well, do they click the Apply box after ticking/unticking it? Not that I know if that usually makes any difference but I figure it has some better purpose apart from just merely switching between the different options!

The annoying thing is that it's working now and probably will be for weeks if not months.

Then, for no obvious reason I'm back to square one.

Argggh (that is an actual word, and not an error!).

What I don't understand is, what are they doing to mess it up?

I'm even considering threatening them with a visit from Robert!

They may have received external email from friends which could have a fancy background on the body of the message - they may be trying to find a way of getting a funky background themselves.
Obviously if they don't knowhow they will click here and there and as it is a mail cosmetic job they are after they will no doubt try Mail Settings to fiddle.

If they have interfered with the POP and SMTP settings then honestly I cannot help, I haven't done t hat since college and that is 4 years ago now.

They touch nothing unless I tell them - honest!

I really can't understand how the settings can change.

    They don't change themselves.

Yes - that's what I used to say...

But I don't think they would be able to find their way into changing the settings - and why would they do it (to me!)?

Something must happen that I'm not aware of.

It only began when the AAT website changed.

HAHAHA - Honestly, we all know how much this web site breaks down, but you can't seriously blame your network on the an external entity! hahaha, classic - love it.

I'm not sure whether there is a button somewhere within Outlook that restores all default settings - try going to HELP > MS Office Outlook Help ..... or press F1

Search for "Default Settings" or something and see anything comes up about defaulting settings for mail etc... I'm not sure whether there will be or not but try it anyway.

But, if it has rectified itself just leave it.

The website may be many things, Helen, but to muck up your Outlook??

    I'm hurt

I dread to think what sort of straws you like clutching at!

It hasn't rectified itself - I asked them to remove the tick. It's how it got there in the first place that mystifies me.

Do you think that the default has a tick and they might be hitting that F1 key? In fact - I bet that's it.

The AAT connection was really a fib - thought Malcolm had nodded off, but obviously not!

The PC isn't used in an office and as far as I know, they don't know that the AAT site exists...

    Just about awake still!

Now that sounds like the work of a gremlin who is working out of hours.

    Re:Outlook Express - Help!

Seems you're not going to get anywhere with this Helen, since unless they're on a dial up connection, I still can't understand how that tick box prevents you sending/receiving messages whereas changing the POP3/SMTP or user name/password settings most certainly will!

Since most people now have broadband with its always on connection, that tick box is no longer as important as it used to be when we paid by the minute through the old dial up. In fact, I don't know if it now has any use at all since - in theory - you can't hang broadband up as such.

I also remember Outlook Express was one of the most widely used entrances for trojans/viruses and often exploited for its vulnerabilities...

    Re:Outlook Express - Help!

Thanks but it is now sorted. They were hitting, in error, a default shortcut that put the tick in.

While the tick was present the connection (on broadband) dropped after they sent or received an email - and when they changed a web page.

As I said previously, it has happened before and is just very frustrating.

It's a small keyboard and they have chubby little fingers which may explain it!
