When you start a new job, are you allowed to see the reference your previous employer has given you ?
I've been given conflicting answers on this so wondered if anyone here knew ?
Thanks

Re:Employer References
I believe that under the Data Protection Act, you have every right to see what information is held about you, therefore you should be able to see exactly what has been written as a reference regarding your previous employment. As a matter of course, I always request to see what is held in my Personnel file on a regular basis.0 -
Re:Employer References
yes - I'd second that. An employee has a right to request access to data held about them - appraisals, references etc.
It's partly for this reason that a lot of employers are now refusing to give a reference for ex staff.
Too afraid that either the ex-employee will sue for it being bad - or the new employer sueing because it's mis-sold their new, not as good as they thought, employee.
