I have a job interview in a local accounting practice tomorrow. The role is for a Trainee Accountant.

I have recently passed AAT and wish to progress onto ACCA - which this job will allow me to do! I have over 2yrs of working as an accounts assistant for a manufacturing company and 1yr working as a finance assistant for a public/charity company. Occasionally In my spare time I also help a self-employed friend of mine compleate accounts work for her own private clients (tax returns, investigations...)

Unfortunatly I have had no experience within an accounting practice.

What sort of salary is this job likely to offer me - I live in the North Wales area!

What sort of questions are they likely to ask me?

Any questions which I could ask them?

Thank you

Can't help with the other questions, but would say a salary for a trainee is about £12-14k to start with. Surprised you don't already know what it is!

    Good luck.

    Hi Miriam,

I've worked at a north west accountants since Dec and am currently on £15K, (Studying Technician level) During my interview they asked me how confident i felt about my exams and what i wanted to do in the future, i think they were impressed by how commited i was in becoming ACCA Qualified and how confident i felt about passing my exams (even though i wasn't)

Try to relax and just be honest, if you dont know something just say that you dont know it but your more than willing to learn. I said i had all of the theory but no hands on experience... i got the job so i must have done something right...

    Good Luck!!! :D x

    Hi

With regards to you being honest they could ask you what you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses. They may ask you where you see yourself in 5 years time, ie how you wish to progress.

good luck with the interview, let us know how you get on and if you get the job!

    Miriam,

I myself am a qualified accountant having studied both AAT and ACA with a top 20 practice in London and for the last 6 years have been specialising in the recruitment of accountants.

Should it be that your interview did not result in an offer, I would take the following into account

Recruitment companies charge their clients a fee for finding candidates, a cost which most employers would rather avoid when recruiting essentially inexperieced staff.

If you are serious about becoming a chartered accountant, I would seriously recommend applying directly to all of the accountancy practice firms in your region. You will stand a far better chance of employment this way as you will not cost the employer a "finders fee".

I recommend http://www.careeradvance.co.uk/ which is a specialist accountancy job board that has been developed by qualified accountants. They have a trainee careers section where you will be able to view a directory of all the leading practice firms and submit your CV directly to their student recruitment team.

    I hope this has helped
