Is it legal if people in a company(such as, receptionists & colleages) open those letters marked with specific individual name? Even those letters regarding to work and business only.

Please adivse, thanks

    Re:Is it legal?

Post that is sent to a business is the property of the business, even if it is marked for a specific person, unless there is a clear agreed policy that marked post won't be opened so it can be opened by the approriately delegated person/s.

This is standard business practice rather, I would think, than a point of law however it would stand up in court because it is standard practice.

We have this debate about once a year with our staff, who are happy for Colleague A to open 'their' post but not Colleague B. Quite simply if it's sent to the business it may need to be actioned by a specific person but it doesn't belong to them.

Obviously it depends on the type of business as to what level the employee needs to be at, for confidentiality reasons, before they are allowed to open the post.

If we send sensitive documentation we clearly mark the envelope 'strictly private & confidential'.
