worth adding ATT to AAT

I am considering taking the ATT exams to add to my AAT. It's quite expensive and I wondered if anyone had any views as to whether they found this a worthwhile addition? Any benefits etc. as far as finding clients, or do you find AAT is enough?

Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
So far I have been suprised to find that clients are more interested in the hourly rate than my abilities !
I suppose it would depend on the type of client that you are pitching for.0 -
Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
I studied for ATT about 5 years ago, but what with the pressure of work and home-life, I did not work hard enough and only passed half the exam! Good experience and I learned alot. Although not qualified, I would recommend it.0 -
Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
I am both a member of AAT and ATT and cannot recommend the ATT enough.
If you are setting up in practice and offering tax services then you will find the knowledge invaluable.
As for attracting clients, well, most of my clients have not heard of AAT let alone ATT. Actually, many of my colleagues in the accounting profession had never heard of ATT!!0 -
Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
I fully support what Dean has just said!
I am currently studying the ATT myself and i've just sat the new Papers 2 & 3, just awaiting the results now. I'm studying and taking my finals in November this year.
The knowledge i've gain is invaluable to my practice! Be prepared to take another step up from AAT level and if you aren't determind to pass you won't, there is now a very wide syllabus with more detailed knowledge required for each exam.
It will also open another path for you i.e. the chartered tax route as well as have the chartered accounting route.
I'm gulten for punishment and considering continuing down the CTA (chartered tax) route.
I can also recommend Tolley's as a course provider, check out their webiste there, www.tolleytraining.co.uk

Many thanks for all your comments. They have been very helpful. You have convinced me that it is worthwhile. Cheers0 -

I have also sat (and passed!) the ATT exams. I agree with the others, it is a lot of hard work and don't expect clients to be impressed with the initials after your name, but a lot of what you learn is very relevant and I still refer back to my ATT notes on a regular basis.
Good luck with it.

Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
I was going to ask the same question myself, but I gave up trying to register (weeks ago) at the 3rd attempt.
Im giving up my job and becoming a MIP and because I work in industry and have basically had this job since I left school, I dont have the experience / knowledge you guys do, even if I have sat it at CIMA.
I have the "luxury" of a well established local accountancy firm willing to help me with all my queries and help me through my knowledge gaps by giving me experience (well they're the one's that have talked me into this huge step so it would be rude not too ha), but I think after reading this its almost made my mind up.
So I'll be predominantly book keeping for a while then

Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
Hi Allen
Good luck in your new life as an MIP. I am sure you will be able to put your experience in industry to good use and you are lucky to have a local accountant to support you.
Bookkeeping isn't so bad - it will give you a good insight to your client's business which will help you when you come to do final accounts and tax returns.
What experience have you gained in your current job? - it is probable that the skills and experience you have will be transferable to your new clients - hopefully you will be able to offer some management accounts / financial control services as well.
Also, ny favourite question - where are you based?
Good luck0 -
Re:worth adding ATT to AAT
Hi Sheelagh,
Thank you for kind wishes, yeah Im fortunate to have a lot of experienced heads to fall back on and they're the guys that have pursuaded me to give it a go, by telling me they'll be there for all my "daft" questions.
Yeah I don't mind bookkeeping, it wasn't meant to be derogatory to bookkeeping or bookkeepers, more of a joke at my own expense, as I wont have anywhere near the wealth of experience and broad knowledge you guys have, as I've basically had this one job from leaving school (almost).
I am Financial Controller at my current employer (nearly into my 2nd Month of my 3 Month notice) having worked my way up from Purchase Ledger Clerk as a kid, so I'm sure I have learnt something which can be useful to some people....well I hope
Im from Gateshead, if you aren't familiar with it, its just over the Bridge from Newcastle.
