Employee Leaving

We have an employee who has been with us 18 months but has decided that accountancy is not for him, so he handed in his notice a few weeks ago and is due to leave next Friday.
Since last Monday he has been 'sick', and we do not believe we will see him again. He has unifinished work to complete, is there anything we can do about this?

Re:Employee Leaving
This depends how strictly you want to follow the letter of the law. After the third qualifying day, you could put him down to SSP only, or if he wants to be paid in full, allow him to use any accrued but as yet untaken holidays to replace the days off work. If you have a watertight sick pay policy, he might argue a case for discrimination i.e. that you paid others for time off sick but not him, but I imagine it's unlikely he would. He just wants to be off and away.
However, has he rung in and said he's actually sick or is it a case of just not turning up? If the latter, I don't see why you can't just treat it as an unauthorised absence i.e. unpaid, if you have a policy for that. Post this on the employers Forum and/or PM people who probably have more direct employer/employee experience such as Gill or Baggybooks (aka Helen).
Regards,
Robert
