Is there any way I can find out whether a company is registered for VAT, when they should be, but I don't want to ask them. Complicated!

Re:VAT Registration Check
Do they not supply you with an invoice? It should be marked on there.
I'm struggling for a reason why you can't just ask them? Is it one of these electrical firms that might disappear :P

A builder who is giving a client a price of £160,000, claims to build houses and extensions on a regular basis, claims to have several employees etc, but shows no VAT number and makes no reference to VAT.0 -
Re:VAT Registration Check
Tricky..
First thing to do is absolutely ask them for their VAT number. If they hesitate then you should immediately be wary.
The 'checking service' will only confirm whether a VAT number actually exists. You will not be able to confirm whether it belongs to your contractor or not.
Therefore there is no way of checking whether they have just 'borrowed' the VAT number from someone else.
Sometimes you can phone HMRC and speak to a 'friendly' officer who will confirm whether the VAT number you have matches the supposed contractors details.0 -
Re:VAT Registration Check
Thanks. I will try to get their VAT number direct and then check it with the site you gave. Thanks again for your help.0 -

Companies house dont give this info and Inland Revenue will only check a VAT no. if you have one.0
