BTC - Writing Down Allowance query

Right...finished with PEV, now on to BTC!

I am doing a practice exam paper and I have £850 in my capital allowances main pool.

When looking at the answers, the £850 has been 'written off' by the WDA before the additions have been added to the pool.

I thought that WDA was 20% and it is calculated at the end (after additions, disposals, AIA etc?) Or is it the case that if there is an amount small enough brought forward that this can all be written off in one go? And if so what is that figure?

    if the balance is below 1000 you you get 100% small balance allowance :)
