Having recently gained full membership and professional status, a close friend has inquired if I could countersign his passport photo/identity; not sure if I am now in a position to do this, has any other full members assisted friends with this request? Just like to know my position.......

    It's irrellevant - you need to be of good social standing (teacher, solicitor, shop manager, accountant etc), not a certain qualification.

    I’m happy to confirm that it has always been the case that any AAT licensed accountant can countersign a passport application providing they meet the Home Office requirements which are that;

    • You have known the applicant for at least 2 years
    • You believe that all the information the applicant has put on the form is true
    • You live in the UK
    • You have a British passport yourself

    This is because accountancy is a “recognised profession”

    You do NOT need to be a Chartered accountant.
