Temporary work

I was made redundant this week by my company as they say my job was no longer needed even though I practically ran the whole accounting side myself. My source says that they hAve got someone else to do my job which I thought might be happening as there was a lot of meetings going on with my boss and strange people.

I am going to see about suing them for unfare dismissal but has anyone done temporary work with agencies. How did you get the position as well as I need another job.

I'm sorry to hear you have been made redundant, but look at the positive side, you now can look for another job where you are happier, as you never really seemed happy there.

Have you been to all the agencies with your updated CV and asked them for work and let them know you are available immediatly?

Also it seems to help to call/ visit them about once a week to see if they got something yet, so they don't forget about you.

I got my current job as a temp job via Robert Half and I was basically lucky that I was available straight away and they needed someone to replace another temp who was ill. The job started for 3 days a week and another temp for the other 2 days. When they decided to make the job permanent they offered it to me full time.

Hope it all works out and you got your dreamjob soon!

    Hi, sorry about your job.

I would recommend BTG or Platinum recruitment. When I was looking for work these two kept in touch and got me interviews. A lot of agencies didn't stay in touch after you were on their books.

Hi Glynis, hope you're not feeling too down. Have you contacted ACAS? I was talking to some agency people at a jobs fair yesterday, & they admitted that they rarely even read the emails that they receive lately. She said the best thing was to go in with your CV, references & passport (which they need to photocopy to take you on their books) & ask to see somebody there & then. She said that for most of the advertised jobs they already had people in mind (who had taken the mentioned steps). I really hope that this will turn out well & you'll eventually find a role you love & thrive within. Randstad have now become the UKs largest recruiter, apparently.

    Finding something better

    Hi Glynis

Hope you find something a lot better soon. They seem to have been quite a shady outfit to work for anyway, and you probably will be happier with a firm that appreciates you.

I would concentrate on getting your CV out there to a variety of firms as soon as you can, on line, in person etc.

One hint someone gave me - It may be worthwhile getting some photos professionally done to include with your CV rather than the usual ones we get from photo booths - which usually come out looking like police mug shots!

    Regards

    Siobhan

Sorry to hear about the redundancy Glynis! My job was going there as well, but I managed to find a contract role through an agency that is going to last at least 12 months. It's a fantastic opportunity for me as I am not getting the hands on experience for management accounting that was getting me turned down for other roles. I ended up registering with about 5 different agencies, and after 3 months of interviews was finally successful. AGencies are a good thing and the best thing to do is to let them know you are available immediately for work. ALso, as suggested on here already, contact ACAS about your redundancy, especially if they just replaced you with someone else doing the exact same thing you were doing to see if you have a case.

Hi Glynis, be positive and look forward for your next role. If i were you i wont get into suing your ex employer. You will need them for reference purposes and I my experience you will normally be asked for reference from your last employer. Doesnt matter how unhappy you are you might need them for your progression so dont burn your bridges.

Times are difficult for everyone at the moment. Start preparing yourself for interviews. Get registered with the agency by choosing one as they all are interlinked somehow! I found Page Personnel really helpful in terms of giving me the right job interviews and feedback.

I would also recommend in your situation to contact Job centre and Citizens Advice Bureau if you are unsure of things.

    Hoping you for the best.

seriously asking about temp work with agencies Glynis??

and I quote from 10 DAYS AGO:

I agree with Mark agencies are hopeless, hypocritical time wasting cheats who promise the earth but never deliver. I gave been registered with a number if agencies to find me a job but have they? Have they hell.

You're better off writing to firms and keeping your eye in websites. Never use agencies!

Some attitude! tell the agencies what you said above and see how much they want to help you then. No wonder Blobbyh gets his back up!

Im sorry that times are hard, but try being polite!

If you can, register with the agency in person. Take a copy of your CV and your passport or birth certificate. Make them aware you are available immediately and will consider temporary roles but would prefer permanent/temp to perm.

And don't slag off your previous employer to the agency, the agency will need to contact them for a reference.

And don't mention that agencies are time-wasting cheats ;)

Or infer that simply because the recruitment consultants are younger than yourself they can't possibly know what they're doing. Also be aware that if you're going to a specialist accountancy agency, some of the consultants may often be professionally qualified to a much higher accountancy standard than yourself, they just don't need to demonstrate it to candidates.
