Control accounts for wages

I have gross wages Ers NI and Ers pension on the debit side of my journal. I then have net wages control PAYE control account and pension control account. However there was maternity pay paid. How do I make the journal balance as we paid maternity so it is in the gross wages but it was then deducted from the PAYE so it won't balance?
