could anyone help me with the following question on prof. ethics.
is it wrong to:
offer a 25 % discount for the first year to all new clients introduced to your firm?
offer a commission to all staff for any clients introduced to the firm?
offer a free initial consultation for every potential client that joins the firm?
also what are the ethical issues that come out of this cenario??
your in a local pub for a drink and by chance you meet a client of the firm he asks you many questions about tax and then mentioned that he's come into a huge some of moneyand ask you to give him some advice on what would be the best thing to do with it???
any help would be much appreciated..
many thanks...

Re:professional ethics???
Well with the exception of maybe last, they are all appear legally sound and we live in a capitalist society so they cant be classed as unethical to me.
Of course they could be bad for business, as your existing customer base might not like it or other pressure groups and outside organisations, but I wouldnt say that has anything to with ethics.
Unless we are talking about some new wooly academic topic that I havent read about yet!0 -
Re:professional ethics???
Hi
I completed a Business Management Degree last year and a whole unit was on Business Ethics. Whilst at first i thought it to be a 'woolly academic' subject by the end i began to see that all points can be argued positive depending on you view point. There are four main ethical stances - of which i can't remember the exact names - but i guess that in your case provided that the examples do not break any accounting rules they could be seen to be ethical.
The ones i do remember clearly are:
1. the greater good to the greatest number of people and 2. the libertarian view.
There are many books available on ethics, emerald is a good academic site for sourcing texts and journals although you do need a password but my univsersity had membership so i used it alot for my essays. Failing that you could try the business section of your library or do a google search for business ethics or accounting ethics in your case.
Hope this helps a little.0 -
Re:professional ethics???
Wow, of course you are absolutely right!
Heres a huge area on Wikipedia:

I have recently studied corporate governance and it seems that it falls under this umbrella to, and alot of that is far from a description of common sense or a wooly academic topic.0
