Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website

Hello all,
I'm aiming to do some part-time self employed work and have been trying to get as much information together as possible and have got a lot of help from members of the discussion forums.
I'm probably going to wait another 12 months until I'm in a position to start but I've had an idea of starting a website were people can post helpful self employment information such as spreadsheets, useful contacts, charges, etc, etc..
I've been sent a few spreadsheets by various people and found them very useful and I though it would be good to have a site were people could leave spreadsheets, exchange ideas, pass on information from seminars/courses. The website would not have any answers to AAT documents or AAT projects and will purely be there to exchage ideas and help each other.
I will not be making any money out of this, only getting useful advice myself for when I go self-employed.
If I'm going to do this I wanted to know if anybody would be interested, if there are enough people interested I will arrange to set it up. Please give me some feedback. email: jabaccounts@hotmail.co.uk

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
Hi
I would definately be interested, it sounds like a good support network. Ive just gone part self employed and Ive always dealt with Ltd companies but am not so confident with self employed and sole trader so it would be good to have some where to ask any questions I am unsure of.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
Hi
I'd be interested.
I went self Employed last year and have had lots of helpful advice from other AAT members. I've also had quite a few people that got my email address from this forum and have emailed me to ask questions, often very similar to previous people I have answered or a few with questions that I wasnt happy to answer so I suggested they posted on the forum for others to answer. So it would be good if we all had a central point that we could refer to.

I am studying with Tolley's too.
They have a great course. (if you can say
learning about tax is great)
Planning to take exams in November.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
Hi Phil and TLC
I am contemplating doing ATT having finished AAT last summer and really enjoyed a year with no studying and no exams - how are you finding it? Is it a big jump from AAT? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
It is the first real studying I've done since about 1997 and I'm finding the Tolleys Correspondence Course quite straightforward and logical. I am in the early stages still (just over halfway through Personal Tax) and am quite comfortable with it all.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
Hi Claudia
I finished the AAT last year and started the
ATT in September. I felt the AAT just gave a
basic understaning of tax and people would ask
me questions about tax I had no idea about.
In my opinion the AAT exams are much easier than
the ATT. However, the ATT are changing the syllabus
next year where instead of taking 6 hours of exams
in one day covering all sorts of taxes ( VAT , inheritance tax etc ) they are
introducing modular exams, which sounds better.
So its probably best to start on the new syllabus
and enjoy a few more months of no study and exams!

Many thanks for that Phil - having got out of study mode it is lovely having a life again, and the thought of more studying fills with me with dread, but i would like more knowledge!!! So i will take your advise and bury my head in the sand for a few more months and then see what the new syllabus holds.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
I am currently building up a small practice providing accountancy services. I am going to start the ATT course next year as I feel that the AAT qualification does not give us the knowledge to work in tax fields. I have looked on the ATT website and the new qualification allows you to be certificated as competent in each different tax module. I think this is a really good way of assessing students and allows you to concentrate on those taxs you will work with most often.

Re:Self Employment Advice Ideas & Website
If you are any where near finishing the website I would be grateful if you could let me know the address.
The website sounds like a really good idea.
Contemplating the idea of going solo... but finding it very daunting and quite scary as I am not sure where to start.
Any tips from anyone would be great... as would any example spreadsheets that you are using etc etc etc...
Thanks so much!!

Any help or advise would be of great use!! x0 -
