I know it's a little early for this kind of thing but has anyone got any experience of CIMA?
Is it worth persuing ?
Is it too damn hard?
How much effort is there?
Anything I should know?

etc etc

Cheers to all.

Sorry to tag on to your email phone-splat but I'd be interested to know if anyone has studying CIMA completely by home study with Premier Training and how they found it......

    Thanks

No worries Nick, I'd be interested to know what difference it makes "going solo"

    Re:CIMA ?

    Hi,

I completed Technician last summer and was petrified of starting my CIMA studies. However, I have found that AAT has been a great grounding and not found the work that much more difficult than Technician level. Don't know about home study, as I go to Uni, but I would recommend CIMA.

I have simular views. I've only done one week (5 full days) of CIMA managerial level but I've found that I've covered almost everything at technician & intermediate aat, whilst graduates who have been taking it too have been struggling to take it all in. I certainly wouldn't recommend home study, you just won't learn it in the same way and often if you try learning something you may be doing it right but a long way round, whilst a tutor will show you a much quicker way which will be helpful in the exam because it is more time pressured unlike aat.

    Re:CIMA ?

Can you give me any suggestions as to what would be the best option for me given that I work full time and my weekends are precious ??

I did Technician level with Premier Training entirely by home study which suited me fine (I passed everything first time and didn't need to call them once)

I'm very self motivated so doing a couple of hours of study every night is not a problem for me. I appreciate what RedKez says about a tutor explaining it in a quicker way though.

    Any comments appreciated.

    Thanks

    Re:CIMA ?

Having completed AAT and CIMA most of the way by evening classes, when I failed some exams I decided I didn't want to wait until the new Uni year (plus I felt the reason for failing the particular exams was due to poor teaching) so I just re-did my BPP manuals from start to finish on my own and then did a weekend revision course to iron out the few bits I was still struggling with - I then passed the exams with good results. Having done so, I was now out of sync with the Uni teaching year and so did the whole final stage on my own with a weekend intensive revision course tagged at the end and again passed with good results. I believe if I could do that with just reading the BPP manuals and attending an intensive revision course then doing a structured home study course will be fine if that is the way you are used to studying.

    Re:CIMA ?

Oh, and to answer the original question (oops  ) CIMA is a good qualification for industry but not usually found in accountancy practices. It would depend on the sort of roles you are aiming for as to whether it suits you or not. Their website is as follows: http://www.cimaglobal.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-0AAAC564-2D0A4B46/live/root.xsl/aboutus.htm

I found that the early stages of CIMA were very similar to AAT when I took my exams so the jump from AAT studying to CIMA studying was not too great and then obviously as you progress so you adapt.

    Hope this helps.

If I did go on after AAT I'd deffo do CIMA - better grounding for the real world unless you want to go to an accounting firm.

What's the difference between CIMA and ACCA?

My tutor did CIMA and she said she wouldn't advise anyone to do it, she thought ACCA was alot better and it was more of a continuation of AAT. She also said that if you fail one of the exams you fail them all, does anyone know if that is true? So, even if you had passed two of the exams you would need to re-sit them as you had maybe failed one exam.

I did CIMA (as previously mentioned) and you did not have to pass all the exams together except at the final stage. I have just looked on their website at the latest exam structure and CIMA allow you to re-sit any exams failed without sitting them all again so you keep any exams you pass. The following is a link to further information: http://www.cimaglobal.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-0AAAC564-C58AD3CE/live/root.xsl/1301.htm

I would say CIMA is no more difficult or easy than any other accountancy qualification.

It was a long time ago that she studied for CIMA so maybe it was abit different.

    Re:CIMA ?

No problems! It was quite a long time ago I did CIMA too :? The AAT is a good grounding for any of the accountancy qualifications which is why they are all sponsors of the AAT and they all offer some kind of exemption to AAT passed finalists/members.

I would recommend looking at each accountancy's websites at their syllabus and deciding on what your future plans are then choose the one that most suits you. Talking to some qualified accountants can mean getting views biased towards our own qualification - we are proud of our achievements after all - but each has its own pros and cons.

    Thanks for all the comments.
Seems people are impressed with CIMA as a qualification.
I think I couldnt go the home study route (cant bring myself to work that way), but can anyone say how much work you would normally have to do each night if you did it through a day release type scheme?
