Hi,

I am currently still doing my intermediate level however have passed exams and almost completed portfolio. I have therefore been given the oppertunity to start my technician by doing unit 10.

I am quite confuzzled as to what i am to base my project on and wondered if any of u guys who had already done it cud give me a couple of hints?!

I work in practice - a very small practice consisting of only 4 members of staff (all unqualified) then my boss who is a qualified chartered accountant.

I really want to get started on this straight away and have been asked to submit a subject outline a.s.a.p. PLEEEESE can sum1 help? :?

There is a page of tips for Unit 10 in the latest issue of PQ Magazine which you might find useful.

If you are still struggling then I found the orsborne text book for unit 10 very helpful.

I do use the osbourne books, however as i am not actually due to start my technician course till after the summer, i dont have a student record or the books yet...probably why i'm a bit confused! All i have is the guidance notes from this website!

Starting the project early is a very wise move especially if you are planning to complete tech level in one year.

I bought the unit 10 textbook but to be quite honest you don't need it - I know loads of people who bought the book and it ended up being a waste of money.

All you really need are the guidance notes off this website - once you get going it doesn't take long to do (it took me a couple of weeks from start to end).

It took me ages to think of a topic the project putline just needs to be a list of your contents and a rough idea of what you're going to put in each section with a rough word count for each section.

A lot of people base their projects on payroll, I did mine on our fee calculation as it affects our net profit. Maybe you should have a chat to the accountant at your practice, explain to him what you have to do and see if he has any suggestions (maybe something to do with the computer systems?)

One of the problems I had was the implementation of my improvement as I work for one of the big 4 and it is virtually impossible for me to implement anything.

Also, use this site - its really helpful if you have specific questions but remember you cannot request to see other peoples projects.

Sorry this is long winded .....

    Re:Unit 10 - Help!

I found the best bet is to ask what work if they've implemented any new changes/policies recently and base it on that. You don't really need a book at all, once you get started (and starting is they key) it should become fairly easy, especially if you have a tutor who will review what you've done and tell you what you need to improve easily.

It might or might not help you but heres a few things which might make it a little easier:

Presentation - Make sure you have (not necessarily use this but something simular):
    1)a front/main page with your details e.g. name/candidate number/project name on it.
    2) Contents
    3)Terms of Reference
    4) Methodology
    5) Executive/Management Summary (do this page last)
    6) Introduction
    7) Managing People
    8) Analysis of Current System
    9) Current System - Further information (if you want to go into fraud for example use a extra section)
    10) Recommendations
    11) Implementation & Review
    12) Conclusion
    13) Appendices
    14) Managers Authenticity
    15) Requirements (use this page as a list of all the elements you need to cover and link it up to what you have wrote - see below).

Instead of writing a "project" as such write paragraghs in such a way that you are writing to achieve the elements you are needed to. Make sure you are always using the elements list while writing. For example in your current system section every paragragh should be labelled 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 then in the requirements page you simple say ..as an example:

Element: 13.1 Managing people in accounting environment - H - Covered Section 8.3

If that doesn't make sense (I'm sure it might not) feel free to respond again and I'll try and make it more clear.

I work in the MOD so there was no way i would have been able to implement anything but you can still do the project and present it to your manager - your conclusion would simply be that it was the decision of the management not to implement it at this time

villevalo - I did what you said as I couldn't implement my improvement either. My tutor marked my project but because I didn't implement I had an outstanding PC. I ended up having to to a project top up which was basically one side of A4 of something I had implemented - luckily it wasn't added on to my word count!

    To Stace

Im currently studying AAT at Technician level and am currently doing my unit 10 project.

Like you i work in practice and there are only 4 members of staff, 2 of which are qualified.

I have based my project on a computer system - i am designing a new computerised system to hold all the client records e.g. what we do for them, Y/E dated etc.

    Hope the above helps

    Bexter x :D
