Can anyone help me to understand what is the distinction between an offer and an invitation to treat?

    ok this can take some getting to grips with.

    Basically an invitation to treat is an advert: a shop window sign, an advert in a paper etc.

    An offer has to be identifiable. That is, to a specific person or entity. You cannot make an offer to the whole world. (although there are some exceptions such as Carbolic smoke company but I won't go into that!)
