Wanting some advice as to what salary i should be on.
I work in paractice a small firm with just 3 partners. I have been with them a year now. i started with them just starting my technician level which i have now completed with first time passes and i am due to sit my ICAEW top ups in June.
I started on £10250 and have had no rise since i started. Reviews are usually in June/July and i dont know weather to wait untill then or not to go and mention it.
Also what should i expect to get? I feel very under paid at present.
The firm is based in the East midlands and is a general practice that is only small
Answers on a post card.........??!!

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Hi Vik.
The firm will pay you what they think you are worth and what they can afford. Are they paying for your study and giving you time off?

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Thanks Scott, but your response is very vague!!
Yes they do pay and give me time off0 -
Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
From the information you gave, i was giving a general reply - it was not meant to be perceived as vague.
If you feel you should be on £20k + study, but your firm will only pay £11k + study, you need to be looking for a new employer.

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Hi there
Have you tried looking through the recruitment section of the Technician magazine (if you still get it). If you are fully qualified you sound like you should be on more pay. However you also need to consider local rates of pay, like Scott says any benefits you have etc.
There is no harm collecting info together from local adverts and technician mag. and presenting it to your work to see what they think.
Jobs seem to vary from around 17-20+K for fully qualified (but I am no expert by any means). More if you are lucky but very dependant on employer. Also has your studies meant that your work has changed i.e. do you have more responsibility or more difficult work now - this can help any negotiation.
Hope that helps,
Best of luck

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Hi Vik
I thought Scotty's answer was spot on.
Have you tried asking for a payrise? I ask each July, and touch-wood, I've got one every year since I've been here. (5 yrs). You've just got to make your boss think he/she's getting value for money. This is a small firm - look on the positive side of that; it's easier to stand out & make an impression.
Good luck.
Glenn
(I still feel awkward asking) lol
Hope this helps

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Hi Vik,
I started off in Industry with no accounting qualification on a wage of 9,500, the company were paying for my study and i had one day a week leave. I had no rise after i passed my foundation or intermediate (not that i was expecting a huge one).
I looked for a new job and am now on 13,000 again within industry, however doing nite classes. The company are still paying for my course however.0 -
Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Have a look at this salary guide
http://www.reed.co.uk/salaryCalculator.aspx
I agree that you are prob due a payrise, but i also work for a small company and they tend to pay less - however i like working in this type of company and money isnt everything.
If i was you i'd wait until the your review and then mention it, they may be planning a rise for you anyway and they will prob be more receptive at this time.
Good luck......0 -
Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
It seems the horror stories about practice paying peanuts are true, at least until you are chartered.
8 years ago I was an accounts clerk in industry (in in Lincoln dont know where you guys are but obviously it theoetically should be more down south) and I was on 10,500. I was 19 years old.0 -
Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
Hi
I'm in Gloucestershire and recently saw a practice vacancie. Going from the details in the ad, the practice was looking for a late AAT/AAT qualified with the oportunity to study further. The salary was £17000 (ish) and I belive they wanted around 2 years experience.
I know practice roles tend to pay less no PQs but that seems quite low. I started In industry 4 1/2 years ago with no accounting experience on £11000.

Re:WAges/Salary!!!!
I am 19 and studying foundation level, located in the east mids my salary is 15k.
They also pay for all my studying, but i have no time off!
I think you are definatly getting paid too low, and think you should definatly ask for a payrise, if they wont agree i think you should get out of there, but i dont think it would come to that, you dont ask you dont get, and so long as you dont ask they wont offer it to you on a plate, they are accountants! hehe
Good luck!!0
