    Re:Purchase ledger

    Hi Amelie.

It's usually things like coding invoices, matching to GRNs, paying suppliers, dealing with queries/people chasing payment, etc.

    Good luck!

    Scott.

    Hi,
Thanks for that, what are GRN's? Do you think it is a relatively easy job to pick up?

    Re:Purchase ledger

GRN's are Good Received Notes, i.e. a document that is created to note down what was the stock you actually received from your supplier, against what they say they have delivered to you on their delivery note.

And yes a bit of common sense and you'll be laughing. In six months youll probably be wondering how you can make your next move.

    And good luck!

    Scotty,Lincs
I would also like to have your expert opinion on the following:
I am currenlty doing AAT therough the new Diploma route and hopefully I will complete the Advanced Certificate(Intermediate) stage in the summer. In the mean time, I will be looking for work in Accounts as the company I work for is closing soon. Do you guys think I will be able to find Purchase/Sales Ledger work with no direct experience? I did manual accounts abroad a while ago and when I spoke to an agency recently, I was told to get at least a month's experience on my CV and get back to them. How do you guys think I can do that?
    Thanks
    Tom

    Re:Purchase ledger

You might want to try some temporary agency work? Theres lot of agencies about and you dont really need to have any experience, just show them your not thick really!!

And as you are studying anyway im sure you have a good knowledge of the sales/purchase ledger anyway!

You might only work there for a week or two but you will pick up alot in that time, i worked for booker cash n carry for about 4 weeks and they use the SAP system, putting that on my CV made a big difference and many employers these days look for that, even though i only used it for a short time you pick it up quick.

So even if you hate the job you might get to use a accounting system, or learn a few tips that could be the difference from gettin a job or not!

    Good luck :)

    Re:Purchase ledger

I can't really expand on what Sam1987 said, except I don't really understand why you're trying to focus in sales/purchase ledger. Sales and purchase ledger is really just work that gets you experience in the office environment and is incredibly easy, particuarly on a computer system. Go for any job thats accounting related and preferably the one that has the most varied of duties and possiblity of job enlargement.

Also if your trying to build up a career, you need to decide whether its industry or practice you want to work in.

    Re:Purchase ledger

I tend to agree with Lincs in that there is nothing wrong with starting in sales/purchase ledger, but in isolation they are only a small portion of accountancy. It would benefit you if you did start in sales/purchase ledger and you could build up to assist with management accounts preparation. That's how I started and found it quite enjoyable at the time. In this day and age as well (especially with computer advancement) it isn't that hard to progress especially as your doing AAT as well.

By doing this your AAT studies will become more relevant as they progress to final technician stage.
