Deciding how to commence with diploma route via distance learning

As my subject says, I'm trying to decide how to start my AAT course.
I travel a lot (more time out of the country than in), so it will have to be by distance learning. I am self-employed, so cannot do workplace projects, hence the diploma route.
It looks like most people enrol through FTP/BCC/Premiere. All seem to charge similar for the Foundation level, circa GBP500-600.
I've read a few pages of other threads on this forum, and people seem to vary in how much they rely on personal support from their college to get through.
I have previously worked for many years in and around accountancy (but no formal quals). I suppose my concern right now, is that I'm looking at paying GBP 500 or so, for the textbooks (etc.) and being supervised for the simulations, but maybe not a lot else, and this is a lot of money.
Has anyone else faced this quandry before? Is there a more economical way, or should I just bite the bullet and apply to a college?

Re:Deciding how to commence with diploma route via distance learning
Hiya,
I am distance learning with the FTC and as much help as you need is out there.
If you do need help with anything, the tutor that they allocate you will talk things through with you - mine has been really good although I have only spoken to him via e:mail and not phone (through my own choice)
Questions were responded to quickly and I do feel like the support is there if I need it. I certainly dont feel like I'm out on a limb or getting less out of the course for not being in a classroom.
I dont feel like I've been ripped off, put it that way!

Re:Deciding how to commence with diploma route via distance learning
I approached one of the main training organisations, explained that I am currently abroad for 2 months and asked if I could enrol and have them send the books etc to me abroad. I was amazed to receive a reply saying that they 'are not accredited to offer AAT to students outside the UK'. With the telephone and e-mail, I can't see it matters one iota whether or not I am on holiday, in the UK or not, to be allowed to enrol on the distance learning course!
This is a real shame, as I am housesitting for a friend, and have a great deal of spare time on my hands right now!
I think I will have to ask AAT what their rationale is with this...0
