Hi
I am looking to get some tips from anyone who has gone on further with the AAT from doing the Open Uni Certificate in Accounting?

They say that it is equivelent to AAT's cert level exams? Can this be confirmed?

If this is correct I would be looking to do this first followed by further exams.

I have had a look around on the site but haven't got the navigation sussed quite yet so any pointers of good pages would be great.

Thanks

    Hi

I looked at the OU certificate when I was looking at qualifications when starting out.

Generally the certificate covers the financial and management accounting aspects of AAT Inetermediate/Adv Cert and Technician/Diploma stages, though the OU course also covers more on people manangement. In addition, the OU certificate is 'pitched' at a higher level (university Level 3 = final year of a degree level), but this probably means more detail rather than wider subject coverage.

However, the OU cert will only gain the same exemptions from ACCA and CIMA (not sure about ICAEW recognition)as AAT would, I would also say that AAT is more recgnised by employers as it is considered a professional qual rather than a certificate of study.

The price of the OU cert is also more expensive than AAT would cost you.

    Hope this helps.

My path so far based on what I have been told is to:

    A) Complete BA (Hons) in Business Studies with Accounting(Cert level)

    B) Go on to sit AAT professional exams

Problem with this is because I work the BA will take 5/6 years then a further 3+ doing ATA!! bit too long in anyones book.

Do all accountancy employers look for grads with the exams or can you get there on accountancy specific exams only? (i.e drop the BA)

    Hi

If you looking to move in to accountancy, a degree can open doors for you, particulalrly if you are looking at graduate training schemes. If you were to do a degree first, you may be better off going on to one of the professional schemes afterwards (eg ACCA/ICAEW/CIMA)

If you looking for a qualification to help move you into accounting and youre not particularly concerned with a graduate track, you could do the AAT instead of taking a degree.
