Hi all
I've just finished AAT and am looking to do a small amount of book-keeping in my spare time (already work 9-5)
For a small amount of book-keeping do i need to become a member in practice, get insurance and all te rest. Am really confused as to where to start. I doubt i will be earning very much even if i can get some clients. If i need to get all the above, do i have to do all this before i even start?
Confused but want to earn extra cash!
Thanks

    Hi Cloud3

If you are offering servics to the public even if it is only a small amount you really should become a member in practice and hve PI cover. It is a requirement of AAT.
You can apply to become a regestered member and take advantage of cheap PI cover if you earn less than £5K a year gross income fee( remember this doesn't include your employed work). The only way you could opt out is by subcontracting.
I would double check the info on the members section of this site or contact the AAT. I work for myself as well as being employed as a subcontractor. Although my self employed work doesn't amount to much yet I have still applied to become a member in parctice.
I am hoping my business will grow so that I can work for myself without subcontracting but it is early days yet. Even so I still like the security of knowing I am backed by my professional body and have insurance should anything go wrong.

Congrats on passing AAT and best of luck.
    Hope this helps
