Splitting Variances - Please help me!

Hello Everyone,
I have been doing practice questions for PEV / PCR all week and I cannot get my head round splitting variances between, say, labour efficiency and idle time or between, say, material prices and losses on exchange rates or index changes.
Are there any hard and fast general rules or any easy ways of remembering?
My head is about to explode there is soooooo much to learn for two exams!
