Anyone else in this situation?

Hi There,

I have just finished Intermediate stage and took the exams in June.

I was looking forward to studying Technician stage in September even though I am expecting my first baby in December.

My college gave me some very good advice to take a gap year, as studying would be very, very limited with a new baby, double the workload of Intermediate, plus by the time I get into a routine the exams would just be round the corner making the hardest year of AAT even more stressful because of the circumstances. So this is quite disapointing.

The college has agreed to set me some work in August this year where I can prepare for Techician for Sept 2007. I can look at some past exam papers and do some questions from old books.

Does anyone else have some ideas or are they in the same situation?

Im determined not to give AAT up or completely stop studying for a whole year as it would be very difficult to get going again.

Look forward to hearing from someone, esp someone in a similar position.

Louise

Why don't you plan to do the Unit 10 project in the time off in between? That is something you have to do virtually on your own anyway and it means that you will have it out of the way before you carry on with the rest of technician. I'm sure there are plenty of students who agree that it's great to get it out of the way early!

    Thanks Annette for the advice.

When you refer to the project is this the essay that has to be a minimum of 3,000 words?

Can you tell me some more about this project.

Many thanks for your replies. Louise

I haven't done my project yet, but this is definitely a good idea for you.

Once you've decided which units you are going for next year, you could always buy one of the books to give yourself a head-start.

That's possibly enough to worry about for now!

The unit 10 project guidelines are on this site and they are the best help you can get.

Have a hunt and a read through them and post if you need more help.

    Hi,

I am in the same situation, although my problem is uni. I have just finished tech and was going on to do a degree in accounting and finance but found out i was pregnant with the baby also due in dec, and they have advised that i defer for a year. Not something i wanted to do but i suppose i have no choice.

When i started my foundation i was also pregnant and had to give it up half way through as i couldn't cope with being so tired, so half a year wasted and i had to start again.

    Hope this helps.

    Shelley.

I think it is an excellant idea by Annette to get your project out of the way as it really does hang over you while you are studying the other topics

I have to agree with Annette too. I have a four month old baby and just finished my AAT technician. I struggled alot with pregnancy and after the birth. I was close to developing PND as a result so you have to look after yourself and not bite off more than you can chew. Just remember you have sooooo many years of your working life yet so why rush your career? Babies only stay babies for so long and it would be such a shame to miss out on his/her developing milestones beacuse of studying. They are the happiest times :D

    Hi There,

I would like to thank everyone who posted messages.

I will definitely look into the Unit 10 project and prepare this before I enrol for college next year.

I was beginning to think it was lost hope (regarding AAT), but I can see there's plenty for me to be getting along with.

Thanks Laura for the more personal and good advice, I see what you are saying, keeping in mind the right priorities.

    Many thanks, Louise

I'd try and do one exam at least. I'm sure family will help you with the baby.

Just cause you are having a baby shouldn't stop you - you should consider a home study course that way you can set your own pace and own timetable - I work full time, travel with work and a mother of two school age children. Yes I have been doing this since 2004 but finally I am on the last legs - okay I am lucky with support from hubby and kids but hey it is fun we all sit and do homework at night together - okay you can't do that with a baby - but if you have had a bad week then you just put it off and pick it up when you can
