Bank reconciliation

Hi I have to retake the PLB Unit 3 sim today. One thing I can't understand is where you have to do a bank reconciliation and it says to update the cash book with the direct debits and standing orders. But when you try and add anything to the cash book there is already a c/f figure put in. Can anyone shed any light? pleeeeeeaaase?!!
