I was just wondering how many of you got a salary increase after completing intermidiate level of the AAT and how much you are on?

I am highly dissappointed by my salary of 12000 as iv got 2 years experience and have level 2 and 3 accounts

    Hi Lisa.

You need to change to a job with a higher salary. Check out the job vacancies in your local newspaper.

It can all depend on where you live to - London is obviously higher paid and the North tends to be lower paid.

I'm in the south west and not completed AAT Inter. level yet - I have 3 yrs experience and have had 3 jobs in that time (have only been in the latest 2 wks!). My salary has increased £8k in that time to over £20k!

It also depends on if you work in practice or industry - practice is usually less to start with, I've always been in industry.

Definitely look around at new jobs I'd say or at least do some research, print it all off and argue your case with your employer.

I would definately be changing jobs, I have completed foundation accountancy in Feb and I have just completed Foundation Payroll and I am now doing Intermediate Payroll but before I had completed Foundation Accountancy I was given a payrise and it was more than your on now.

Thanks for your replies, I always thouight my salary was abit low for the job and expirence and qualfications I have. Iv juts started my Techican level and don't know if it is wise to move half way through the course, should I wait till Im qualified as I may have a better chance at getting a decent job. My mom said I should ask for a pay rise but I wouldnt know how to go about it. Any Ideas?

I'd ask for a payrise. Speak to your manager and say that with the qualification you have and the experience you have as well, that you are considering looking for another job with better wages and see if she offers you a payrise to stay. When that it normally said to a manager something is done and a payrise is given.

    Lisa.

Arrange a meeting with your boss.
Ask if you're qualifications will be reflected in your salary.

    Re:Salary

I'm in a very similar situation- same pay, just over two years experience in industry, just starting the Technician level. I've been looking elsewhere, but its very hard to find anyone willing to give day-release, certainly not to anyone part way through. Perhaps it is worth persevering until you finish, if you can tolerate it, that is! I did get a small (£35 per month!) pay rise after finishing foundation, still waiting for intermediate (pay reviews are in the Aututmn here)

Something else I've found, practices will not give me serious consideration as a trainee because I don't fit into their model of an ideal trainee. Namely, they expect to take on 18-year-old school leavers with A-Levels, put them through the AAT and then one of the professional qualifications. This is a generalisation, but not an unreasonable one. Since I am 23, and have only 2.5 years experience (which isn't even practice) it is virtually impossible for me to get in. I don't know if this would apply to you.

To be honest, I don't think this is a particularly well-paid profession anyway. Certainly the perception of accountants getting paid a lot is far greater than the reality.

Not meaning to try and bring anyone down, I just plan to finish the AAT where I am and reassess from there.

Thats nonsense, you just need the motivation and the inclination to not get lazy, and keep your eye on the job market!

I think accountancy is a very well paid career!

It can be rubbish money to start with - especially in practice whilst you are training i.e. £10k - but if you go on to complete ACA/ACCA/CIMA and become fully qualified you can earn anything from £28/30k to £50+!

You just need to put in the work to get qualified before you reap the awards, that's all - but then nothing comes for free does it! :-)

It all depends on the size of the company you work for, whether they pay for study... You need to weigh up the pros and cons before making any harsh decisions, there is no harm in looking at the job market or even contacting agencies with you're experience and see what is available and what salaries.

You can een go for interviews too see what is on offer and turn the job down.

My first job when I left school was for 6k and this year i have had 6years experience and inreased to 18 (and I have one AAT exam left to do) but bearing in mind that is from moving from company to company. I think in experience the best salary increaser is to get new employment and remember it is always easier to get employment when you are in employment.

Let us all know how you get on.

No, I didn't get a pay raise and I don't see why I should unless my role changed and I had more responsibility.

Deposits transfers etc... and also for the last 6 months I have also acted as the Directors PA as the usual PA is on maturnity so this means iv been doing two jobs as well as my study

My point exactly. As the company has grown, I have found myself with decreasing responsibility: the most mundane tasks now take up all my time. My collegues think I should be more grateful for the opportunity to work a mere 32 hours per week (in term time) and have a day off to study (though obviously I have to work 40 hours/week in the holidays with no proportionate pay increase).

All I'm saying is the AAT is not some magic charm that will grant you a very high paid job. Its a lot of hard work for little or no reward- but that's just life! Its not meant to be fair, is it. Imagine how much worse life would be if you knew you actually deserved what you got!
