Hi all,

I am studying intermediate level at the mo and am thinking about getting a job! (currently i am a stay at home mum and i need to get out!)

I am looking for jobs of about 16 hours a week in any area of book keeping, accounting or payroll.
I have limited practical experience though. But I have been treasurer to a busy playgroup for three years, and i also do their payroll.

Most of the jobs i have looked at say wage negotiable. But i don't know what a realistic wage would be!!

I live in rural herefordshire, so i know the rates would be lower than in a city, but there are lots of self employed people around!

Also i am hoping to start being self employed in April to do book keeping and self assessment.

Could anyone give me an idea of the wage level you could expect for these jobs.

Many many thanks,
Cathy

Na I should say more. I mean really no-one can give a figure. Maybe working for an employer it will be lower than self employment but it really does depend on what you put into it and your client base!

Because I am a member of the Institute Of Certified Book-keepers, and passed advance level Book-keeping, they told me that I should charge no Less than £15 Per Hour in the London Area. Outer London possibly £12 Per Hour

I am looking to becoming a member if the Institute of Certified Book-keepers, would you recommend it?

They have told me that passing AAT intermediate would allow me to be exempt from level I and II exams and that i could become an Associate Member. I would also need to register ....something... to be a self employed member (can't remember!).

How good are they, and how good is their information, and how much of a benefit would it be to be a member?

    Sorry lots of questions!

If you have AAT Intermediate, you can do the ICB Advance Book-keeping. The questions are written in a acadamic way where there is a three hour exam in which you get 5 Questions to do in 3 hours.

The marking is graded to get a grade A is 85% above,
B is 70% and 60% is a C 50-59 is a marginal fail. Below that is a fail. In order to pass you must achieve 60& or above.

Once you have passed the manual Book-keeping, the institute will give you a Membership card stating your designated letters 'MICB' which is valid for a year which you will have to pay. If you want to become a self employed Book-keeper with the Institue, you will have to pay for the practice certificate for the year and insurance from Pinsure.

Once you are a member, the institute will either send you Job Vacancies by Email. Or you can access the Jobs by their Website.

The Institte always provides Jobs. Mainly the jobs are for medium sized business who are looking for a Book-keeper part time. The rates are usually about £12- £15 or £20 per hour.

Sometimes the client will asks your hourly rate?

Re:how much could i be paid?

    All sounds good!

    Would you recommend joining?

I want to do books for local self employed people and small businesses. Would AAT intermediate provide me with enough information to do this? At the moment most that i have done is out of text books, is it the same in real life?!!

I need to get work soon as i am running out of money, but i am worried that my lack of real experience would cause me problems when taking on clients. I was hoping that the ICB membership would give me some credibility!

    What do you think?

Re:how much could i be paid?

You can seek advise from the Institute regarding any questions.

They will advise you on how to get clients.

With the AAT Intermediate Your Book-Keeping Knoweldge will be sufficient as the jobs provided by the institute provides Jobs Sutiable for all the Levels of Book-Keeping. Sometimes it specifies that this Job is for Advance Book-keepers.

In the Real life the difference is that all the transactions are presented in Invoices, cash receipts
all we have to do is recognize wheather the invoice is on credit or paid straight away and the natutre of expense/Income.

This is exactly like what we do in AAT Foundation and Intermediate because the AAT Skills Test are presented in a worked based enviroment.
