Fuel Scale Charge

Hi there
Does anyone know the rules on fuel scale charges -
Once you are in, do you have to stay for a certain length of time? If so, how long?
If you come out, do you have to stay out? If so, for how long?
Any help, as always, much appreciated.

Re:Fuel Scale Charge
Does it not just depend on the accounting treatment? i.e. you claim all your fuel and pay the fuel scale charge or you only claim your business fuel and don't pay the charge.
If you do one you don't do the other.... I can't see that there should be any timing restrictions?

Re:Fuel Scale Charge
Hi Claudia
My understanding is that the scale charge applies when the business vehicle is used privately and all of the fuel is charged to the business. The charge is not applied where the fuel costs are allocated between business and private. I don't think it is like a scheme where there is a minimum term (in or out) but suspect it depends on the vehicles in the business.
It might be useful to see if the VAT reclaimed on the fuel is less than the scale charge.
Does any of this help?

Re:Fuel Scale Charge
I've phoned the VAT helpline on this before - you can assess each quarter individually. I've got a client where some quarters I apply the charge and others I just don't claim the VAT on fuel at all and that's apparently fine.
Well, they've just had a VAT inspection and everything was fine, so yes, it must be right.0 -
Re:Fuel Scale Charge
Thanks Jodie - actually a query for myself - somehow I must have been driving on thin air for the last quarter  and about a fiver short of getting to the magic number.
Just didnt know whether I had to lump it, or could decide against it, and then see what it is like next quarter.
Dean and Sharon - I think you were slightly at cross purposes to what I was on about. I use my car for both business and personal use. In order to reclaim the VAT on my (expensive - grrr) diesel, I have to apply the FSC.
For the last couple of years I have always been quids in (prob not though if I had to pay someone else to work it out - te he), but for some reason not the last quarter.
Filled it up today, and might go out on Tuesday and squeeze a few more drops in before it ticks over to 1 November!!!

Ah, perhaps I ought to put my brain in gear before engaging mouth! Now you know why I tend not to answer any posts!
