I am planning to go self employed as a bookkeeper, but I do not have MAAT status as yet. Do I still need to register as a member in practice? And which status should I register for as I don't know how much I will be earning yet? (licenced and regulated or registered and regulated)

Re:Members in Practice
You will find that the AAT are now making it necessary for all members in practice to become licensed although the reduced fees apply as for registered status, providing your gross income is less than £5,000. The only difference it made on my application was that I had to provide a professional cover colleague - in the event of incapacity to do any work. I think we do get more "benefits" for our reduced fee in that we are entitled to use the AAT logo on stationery etc. and licensed does sound better than registered........ good luck. It is quite a wait for the paperwork to get processed first time.0 -
Re:Members in Practice
You must check with the AAT if you are planning on using the logo etc. I think you'll find that although they will grant you "MIP" you still won't be able to use the logos' or make any reference to the AAT until you're qualified.

oops.... didn't notice you weren't a full MAAT. Dean is right, you should check. I waited til I finished the AAT studying before venturing into self employment but am now wondering whether to do ATT for taxation "top up".0 -
