A client has received a spot check from HM Revenue and Customs who have taken away his Z Reports for checking. What are they looking for? Anyone had any experience of this? (NB He is on annual accounting so they haven't got any turnover figures to check against!)

What do they do? I presume it must be retail of some sort.

VAT-man hate pubs - is quite convinced that only every other pint goes through the till!!!!

They will probably, having checked the Z-reading, ask about ullage (wastage in the bottom of the beer barrels), then check the quantity of beer purchased, and then see if anything is missing from the tills.

Sorry - I think that I have made that sound really complicated.

Basic formula - barrel less ullage = number of pints available for sale against number of pints actually sold. The two should be reasonably similar!

That makes sense. Thanks for your help. I will wait for the next instalment from my client.
