Help with RPI!

Hi, I just can't seem to get my head around Retail Price Index. I can remember the equations but I don't understand what it's actually about and without that logic I seem to switch of in all lessons to do with RPI!

Can anyone help? Thanks

    Retail price index is the price of an average shopping basket in the UK. This basket can change over time to reflect changing purchasing habit (e.g. candles used to be in this basket and recently DVD were added in).
