When you attend these seminars do you automatically get given a certificate to say you attended?

Also how do we document our CPD progress?

The whole thing confuses the hell out of me

    Hi Laura

If it is an AAT seminar and you sign in (remember to put your AAT number on the form), the time spent will be added to your on line CPD log (accessed through the website). A certificate will be sent at the end of the year showing AAT CPD.

I keep a separatte record of my stuff as well as recording it on the site as it is easier to print off. Don't forget to add all CPD during the year.

    Does this help?

    Assess, Plan, Action, Evaluate

Assess what you need to learn

Plan how you are going to learn it

    Put your Plan into Action

Evaluate whether it met your learning needs.

You can find a lot of information on this website under CPD Zone.

The AAT are also running workshops on this which are very informative. I attended one at Nottingham a couple of weeks ago and it confirmed what i am doing is correct and relieved my concerns.

    Hi angelangel

Daniel is quite right and far more succint that I usually am. The AAT CPD zone has all the information you need and I use the planner provided on the site.

I've found it far more interesting that merely logging the number of hours (as a MIP, CPD is mandatory for me) and it has made me really think about what I need to know, what is nice to know and what is purely for my own interest.

CPD will be manadatory for all full members from Jan 08, these regulations are in place now for FMAATs and MIPs. And as for the benefits...well, the main one is that it keeps me up to date with relevant techinical knowledge that I need to provide my clients with a good service. It also means that I have an awareness of what is outside my boundaries.

An example is that I know very little about CGT regs but a new client wants to do something with their property which could lead to a capital gain. I didn't advise them but was able to highlight it and recommend that they get professional tax advice.

Only you can decide what is relevant to you but it need not be restrictive and limited to your current role. I read somewhere in the bumf that you can look ahead to where you want to be in the future and include CPD relating to that in your plan or what relates to any voluntary work you do. I don't have any charity clients but do a small amount of free work for a couple of local charities so I keep up to date with changes in that field.

See, told you Daniel was more succint!

Have a look at the site and see what you think.

    Re:CPD Seminars

If you are studying for an AAT qualification then there is no requirement for CPD.

If you are studying for an accountancy qualification then this is your CPD.

If you are studying for something that is related to your work then this counts towards your CPD.

CPD is not a requirement until you are a full AAT member and then it is particular to your job / work or where you want your career to go.

I'm still a student, but keep an eye on the courses that are available and the topics at the branch meetings.

Sometimes they can be beneficial (and interesting), especially to a student already involved in accountancy.

For example, VAT, the Budget, CIS - all relevant to my current role.
