Re:portfolio building Foundation level
Units 1, 2, 3, & 4 will be covered by your skills tests (simulations).
Unit 21 will be covered by computerised accounts elements of your college course (circa January onwards, probably...)
Unit 22 is research and project based, relating to Health & Safety.
Unit 23 relates to future goals, aspirations and ambtions, combined with current/past experiences (ie CV, and research relating to Professional Bodies, etc...)

May I recommend that you change your username to simply 'syedbukhari', and not your email address, as it is currently available to spammers...

Re:portfolio building Foundation level
Arrrhhh, I have just been into college for 3 hours to do office skills. Why do we have to do it? Health and safety was boring but passed fairly quickly but personal effectiveness! There is so much work to do and it is so dull. We have spent since October 1/2 term doing this unit and my file is nowhere near complete. Our tutor is hoping for them in next week so we can start on Sage, but most of us have only done about half. It is so repetetive, why can't it just be an appraisal type thing, with a bit of S.W.O.T. & a P.D.P. rather than pages and pages of stuff. I would rather use the time for the Financial units.
Phew,I think that may have got most of it off my chest. It's just so dull.
Gemma :x :x
P.S. syedbukhari82, i am not working either, but my college didn't do the Diploma. I have to use the 'job' of being a student. So may goals are to complete the course etc and with H&S I had to refer to college procedures.0 -
Re:portfolio building Foundation level
Toadface, why did I not discover this earlier.
I've enrolled onto the the foundation course with FTC as distance learning and I was getting myself in a right pickle about gathering evidence. I phone the college and I felt a bit stupid asking for further clarification.
Just one thing though.....For example if I do the simulation for unit 1, on the student record sheet instead of cross-referring to "work-based evidence" I just put in the box, "simulation"?
Sorry (I lied) another thing...are simulation & skills test the same thing or 2 different things completely? :?:0 -
Re:portfolio building Foundation level
As far as I am aware - Simulations and skill tests are the same thing, just different phrases. (Edit - also 'devolved assessments', etc...)
As for the Student Record, I'm not sure how you fill it in. For past NVQs I've had 'tick-sheets' with several columns which are then cross-referenced with the id-tagged evidence.
Perhaps, further guidance is available from one of the NVQ Intermediates or Technicians.
I will be annoying my college, but you will need to contact your Distance-learning provider... They are being paid and it will reflect badly on them if you don't 'pass' - so it is in their best interest to assist you...0 -
Re:portfolio building Foundation level
Each of the skills tests have that 'gaps' in what they cover listed. So you can just put the number of the test alongside the performance criteria numbers that aren't gaps - if that makes sense.
Gaps are usually covered by supplemental tasks set by your tutor.
The exception to this is the H&S and APE units, there you need to cross-reference the pages in your report(s)
I'm self-employed and work from home and have virtually nothing to do with H&S - there were a good few 'This is what I would do if...' statements in my portfolio along with a fair few bits of information from the HSE web site and other places on the net. It's tricky if you don't work in a traditional office based job or are unemployed but all you really need to do is be creative with your evidence and remeber google is your friend here.
The way I did 22 & 23 was to just write out the performance criteria and work through them one by one. Yeah, it's boring and a pain but I only took a couple of days on each unit (two weeks before the end of term too - but I'd not recommend that as a strategy really).

Cheers Chris
How did you deal with the 'Working with others' parts of Unit 23? You would be able to treat customer/clients, but how about work colleagues/employees? Did you do a hypothetical for this as well?
Somewhere it says you need two pieces of evidence for each item as well!!! Is this ignored when compiling the portfolio?0 -
Re:portfolio building Foundation level
Yeah, I talked about dealing with clients as well as one or two people I can draw on for specialist skills. I seem to recall drawing on some 'working styles' report from the NHS to broaden out this section somewhat.
I'm pretty sure that the 'two pieces of evidence' thing has ever been an issue as far as I'm concerned. I'm not certain without checking, but isn't this more of a recommendation than a requirement?
I also think that any tutor or verifier worth their salt will understand that some people will have issues with some of the performance criteria in these sections and cut some slack accordingly. These units have a strong bias towards people working in tradition office environments and this certainly wasn't the case for many in my Foundation class but we all managed.
I should also add, that having it well organised and nicely laid out will help too - headings, a table of contents and bullet points will get you a long way
As I said before these units may be a PITA to do, but as well as demonstrating knowledge of H&S and APE they are about developing report writing skills and this will help a great deal when you come to do your Unit 10 project down the road.
