Does anyone have a telephone number for HMRC that isnt constantly engaged?

I keep on trying the agent priority number :lol::lol: and even that is constantly engaged.

Got to plead late submission of tax return for client who is in hospital - anyone else had luck with this, and mitigating the £100 penalty?

    Can't help you on the first point, but can you not just file an estimated return & get the client (or someone on their behalf) to make a payment of tax for the estimate & then sort it out when they're better? I appreciate that that's not always practical/possible, but it would make your life a lot easier!

    Actually got through on the main number, not the secret squirrel one - they reckon client has got a good case, just got to put it in writing.

    Jodie - I had thought of that, but I have got no idea what his turnover is could £2K or £200K :shock:

    Anyway, HMRC do have a heart after all!!!

    We had a case like this last year where the we had wrote and requested information from the client, (5th April year end) he never replied to us, then in February when he had his £100 penalty he contacted us saying his mother passed away in the December and was claiming "exceptional circumstances"....

    All the Revenue basically said was "why couldn't he prepare his return between April & December"... The penalty wasn't revoked!
