New CPD

What a load of rubbish it is. Before it was much easier. This is just more hassle we don't need. I don't have the time to sit there and do all this assesment stuff. I just pick the courses I like from say BPP, Mercia. I am also friendly with some ACCA members and get to their local association meetings as to be quite honest the AAT ones are not up to scratch. Now I have to do all this other stuff. It's totally wrong.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you Simon. I am an MIP, so maybe it is different for me, but I am hopeful the new scheme will make CPD more relevant for me.
Previously I found myself booking courses which I might find vaguely interesting, just to ensure I completed the minimum number of hours. Then I would be doing additional research, home learning and day courses to ensure I had all the knowedge to provide a good service to my clients.
Now, when I sign up a new client, or an existing client asks for additional info or services, or I decide to branch out, I can make better use of my time by concentrating on topping up on the specific skills which I know will be useful.

The only aspect I'm a bit unsure about at the moment is the planning timescales. I anticipate that my CPD cycle will be quite short:
    - meet new client
    - identify skills and knowledge gaps
    - initial reasearch and learning need to be completed within a couple of weeks.
This means there might not be much long term planning going.

It might have been easier before, but for me, it wasn't as relevant.

I'm afraid I too disagree with you, Simon. You cannot be an accountant in today's age without keeping your knowledge up to date. If you go on to study ACCA / ICAEW and become one of their members, they also have compulsory CPD. Soon, all the professional accounting bodies will no doubt make CPD essential.

There are a number of methods to obtain CPD units. CPD can be gained just by reading up on an accounting standard/industry activity relevant to your job. It doesn't mean you have to trawl through books and attend courses just to gain the points.

With so many changes taking place within the profession, in all sectors, it is essential that professional accountants and accounting technicians can work with the changes to enable them to give correct advice to their clients and management.

    Regards
    Steve
