CIS - the final countdown

How is everyone feeling about the impending changes?

A lot of the sub-contractors I deal with are simply unaware of the changes - despite the so-called advertising campaign and mailouts.

Personally, I feel a little punch drunk. It seems have to have taken years to get to this point.

One thing that has been of benefit is that I am definitely more pro-active with regards to new sub-contractors. I check their details before placing any orders - rather than have an issue on-site.

    Hi Helen

I have rather given up on it - have talked about it to both contractors and subbies until I am blue in the face and got nowhere - even the sky-high penalties don't seem to be cutting much ice -

    So -

I will wait until the proverbial hits the fan, and then charge accordingly

    Re:CIS - the final countdown

    Hi Helen & Claudia,
As the new system approaches I am curious as to the position of sub contractors. The company I work for are on gross payment so at the moment I issue gross payments vouchers to our contractors. I have long suspected that some of the smaller firms are just not bothering to send them in (keep running out of vouchers & the revenue tell me I should have X no. left) I haven't any idea if they have seen our reg card as it sits in a drawer in the office . I tend to pick up it is subbie work from the type of job done ie it is for one of their customers, so issue a voucher. Come April when I stop issuing vouchers, how do I stand if I know it is subbie work? Surely we can't be held responsible if the contractor doesn't bide by the rules?
I was thinking of writing to these firms with the information they will need once the new system comes in "just in case they haven't got us down on their list of sub contractors". Or do I leave well alone?
Also - while I'm using your experience:
My hubbie occasionally does work for builders (he has his own double glazing installation business) and one of them keeps saying as long as we give him a quote before hand he doesn't need to be registerd for CIS. Can you confirm he's wrong and hubbie does need to be registered - he was at one time but it may have lapsed :(

Hope this makes sense - its rather late. Oh the joys of working full time and being his freebie bookkeeper etc.

It's going to be a minefield and I don't think the HMRC helpline will be able to do much if we have problems.

I have been proactive and contacted subcontractors when orders are placed - rather than wait until they begin the work.

That is helping and most are fully aware that there are changes...but not what they are!

Quotations wouldn't affect the use of CIS.

Quotations won't affect the use of CIS
As I thought Helen, although I have now been quoted (sorry no pun intended) the same speel from someone who has done a job with my husband. Except that he has been given the info from his "accountant" who I used to work for before I became MAAT! "CIS won't effect you as long as you give out quote"
I want them to invoice the customer seperately which will get round the issue of whether hubbie "employed" him.

Does anyone else feel as if they are fighting a loosing battle trying to do things correctly ?

Friction at home this morning - wanted hubbie to ring up the revenue to check he was still registered for CIS and he wouldn't. Cause they won't speak to me will they!! If you think clients are a pain - trying working for your husband & for free!! (Had to come to work without a kiss  )
