Was hoping if anyone could give me any advice.

I've got Sage skills, a bookkeeping certificate and (hopefully) just finished the AAT Intermediate but I have no idea what salary I should be aiming for.

Does anyone know what salary range I should expect with these qualifications or how much I should charge per hour if I worked freelance? One college said at least £20 per hour but a business adviser said I'm lucky to expect £8-10.

(I've got a couple of years of bookkeeping experience but its self-employed so I dont know if that would count as valid experience to a potential employer.)

Any advice would be REALLY appreciated.
Thanks.
Saj.

Hi

Salarys in my area (Gloucestershire, Southwest) are usually around the mid teens for intermediate qualifieds with some general accounting experience i.e £14500 to £16000 plus study funding etc, but thats in employment and not necessarily free-lance.

A college who told you to expect £20 per hour seems rather misinformed as this would equate to a salary of around £36000 to £40000, which you could only expect to get after qualifying with a CCAB (CIMA, ACCA etc) and have several years post qualification experience or having lots and lots of clients! if you were working freelance a charge of around £8 to £10 per hour seems reasonable, but i dont have that much knowledge of the going rates and the work your doing and the size of the compnay it is for would also have an effect.

Neil0 -

i started work in accounts 4 years ago for a small company when my kids got older. i started a new job in a chartered accountants partnership about 4 months ago. at the moment i get £24,000 a year (i'm in london). in the AAT magazine it gives you guide lines to the salaries you can expect, but they are averages. i think with this kinda job its alot about selling yourself and, if you are confident and able, you can make them realise they need you. i've found that working for a chartered accountants means that i work on lots of different clients and i believe that it is pretty invaluable to a company to look after their staff because basically you know their business inside out and its always hard for someone new to pick up where you left off. what i'm really trying to say is that if you're good and capable you can command more in my opinion.0 -
