Hi all, i was a little dissapointed with the way in which the results were issues. This being my first AAT exams i was hoping to receive a breakdown of my exam result but only have if i passed or failed (luckily passed both. Just wondering if there is any way i can get hold of a more in depth analysis of my exams and the persentage / points i was awarded?

Regards

I'm in exactly the same position as you. I don't think there is a way to find out a breakdown of the marks, but if you find one, let me know!

There is a note on your results letter, it says something like, if you would like to see a breakdwon of the script in which your exam was marked please ask someone < it also states next to it this is to be used in order to appeal any failings that you think are wrong. Anyone know if i can ask them for this script although i had passed both? i would love to see where my faults were! Plus i have a wager with someone here that i had over 90% pass rate!

You can never try too hard since if you pass you'll know it was worth it. "Understudy" and you may end up paying the price.

I know why you're frustrated that you can't see your pass mark but you just have to happily accept your pass for what it is and move on.

I would never consider making a bet for a certain pass mark since the pressure is already high without adding to it.

Bear in mind though that some students didn't pass and might view this thread as overt bragging or insensitive.

I don't see anything wrong with people to be wanting to know where they stand.
And for example I can't check my answers to the ones on website because it was ages ago and I can't remember what I wrote on exam.

I agree Annette and one of your favourite things - previous comments have been deleted making my own post largely irrelevant. I can only see one example where knowing a score could be relevant is when you failed but thought you actually did quite well.

When I took my driving test years ago it was a straight pass or fail. There wasn't any of this percentage scores where you could say "Yes we both passed but I still did better than you etc..."

This thread is in noway aimed to brag. The fact i had a bet was just for humour purposes, ot was not some large bet, more like a bar of chocolate.

I cant understand why you would "not" want to see the areas you had failed in. One can only get better by studying the areas that they no they are weak at. As someone said above, at the moment i have no idea what part of the exams i had wrong, i may now be classed as competent yet i may be doing something wrong and not know about it.

I understand the idea behind the pass/fail system, but I think it would be a good idea to at least have some sort of distinction level or something like that. I know that for me, competition makes me work harder. I'm sure that's true for a lot of people (not everyone of course).

A lot of other qualifications give you grades. My degree had "classifications".

I would like to know how I did relative to the rest of the country, but then i'm not the sort of person who would brag about it if I did know and had done really well. Generally, there's always someone who's done better :)

It doesn't matter how we do compared to others, just how we did for our own sense of achievement.

I think it would be a good idea to have breakdowns on the papers - especially as some of the topics continue over the different levels of AAT.

It might be unlikely, but a clanger dropped in an earlier paper could make all the difference to passing or failing another.

Critical marking of report writing might also be beneficial. Could a candidate have improved their marks with a little tweaking?

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

Having just come from A Levels and completed AAT Intermediate level I was suprised that there was no breakdown of exam results.

In the past my friends and I have been used to receiving percentages or marks as it told us our strengths in the particular topic - a straight forward pass or fail is a new concept to us.

I can see both sides of this debate - on one hand yes the breakdown is irrelevant, however for those of us who possibly found a paper quite hard it would be comforting to know if it was a clear pass or a scraped one.

There is no shame in wanting to know a bit more detail about how you did.

I think we should know our percentage/marks on the basis that if an employer looks at two intermediate qualified candidates and sees a 90% pass rate and a 51% pass rate, which one would the employer be more interested in? Whereas at the moment those two candidates look the same.

But at the end of the day theres no point in complaning, we just have to get over it.

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

I disagree Gem since a pass mark only reflects upon how good you were on exam day, not upon your overall accounting knowledge and ability. Potential job candidates are scored as much upon their performance at the interview as they are upon their performances at previous exam results.

Now if we were to compare this to say two people on a driving test, does this make one a better driver than the other other because he/she may have scored marginally higher even though - overall - both drivers were successful?

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

Fair enough if you do have a bad day your mark won't be as good. But if I had a bad day and if I knew I'd only passed with 51% I would appeal, like I imagine most people would.

Maybe we don't even need marks, perhaps grades like GCSE's and A levels.

And in a way you do get marked in your driving test. ie. 'I passed with one major and two minors' and another may have passed on two majors and twelve minors, even though they'd done the exact same route. I know it's very stereotypical but I would have said the first person was a better driver.

This argument is argued every year, it's not worth stressing over because the situation won't change.

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

It's a long time since I passed my driving test Gem (!), but the main issue isn't about how many points we did or didn't get but whether we were ultimately classed as competent/not competent.

If you thought you did bad, but still passed any of the AAT exams, maybe it should be taken as a warning shot. If you thought you did well but failed, download the papers from the resource section and tackle them again. Anyone appealing should do the latter option first before spending out since it may point out incorrect assumptions and/or let you know where you went wrong in preparation for next time.

I haven't done my driving test yet :( haven't even done my theory!

I had my second lesson the Saturday before last and my instructor keeps telling me how I'm such a natural. I daren't tell him I've already had four lessons because then I don't get the discount!

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

This entire thread has gone completely out of hand from one person trying to find out a simple breakdown of marks. People for some reason seem to have taken offence at this initial enquiry and are under the impression that all of us who are interested in our marks are out to brag :!:

I thought we were all here to support each other - surely a simple "I'm afraid they have never issued breakdowns and there is no easy way to find out" would have been enough.

Was it really necessary to go into a full on debate and make others feel ashamed of wanting to find out how they did in a bit more detail?

Some people on here seem to think that their opinions are more important than others - just because a pass/fail suits your style of learning does not mean that it suits us all.

    Re:ECR & FRA exam results

    Everyone chill out. OK.

Basically, I have never heard of breakdowns being supplied to students who have passed. However, please take comfort in the fact that in order to pass you need to be "competent" in every section of the exam. Therefore, you can assume that if you passed the exam you did well and are competent.

However, I do agree that it is a bizarre marking scheme.

Well done to everyone who passed there first exams and good luck with level 3. I am starting level 4 this month so please wish me luck. :)

Hehe, it was just a view, or a topic of discussion! There are points to both sides, i have had exams before and seen the marking of them. This was my first AAT exams.

Anyhow i think this topic has run its course!
