This is too sensible for Study Buddy, but not accounts related enough for General Accounts.

What I would like is a primer on computer mainenance. Especially for my personal notebook/desktop rather than my office PC. What would you recommend to keep your computer in good health?

All hints and tips appreciated.

Remove Programs not used any more via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Run Anti-Virus to clean anything untoward
Run Anti-Spyware to rid anything untoward
Run a Check Disk (CHKDSK) to find and fix any errors on the Hard Drive. (My Computer, Right Click on C: (where C: = HDD)> Tools > Error Checking | Check Now)
Restart the PC and let Windows do the hard work... depending on size of HDD, this could take anywhere up to 2 hours (and depending on how screwed your HDD is)..
Defragment your HDD (IE, group all data from one particular file in one place rather than bits of data here and there - this will speed up performance.
Run a 'Scan and Clean' your registry.
Amend what programs should load up when Windows Starts.

If you're running a mature Windows installation and still have all the original installation/restore discs that came with the computer (plus those for any other peripherals or software etc), you could try using those for clearing out the unwanted clutter that eventually builds up. Make sure you back everything up first though 'cos you'll lose it forever if you don't!

As a general rule on my personal computers, I try to back-up and restore every twelve months or so to get rid of all the accumulated junk and go back to a "clean" system. Of course, this is in addition to the routine maintenence that Jamie mentioned in the last post.
