I will be starting a new job soon and will be unable to do Intermediate at college in September. Just wanted advice on best home study company. Also is it just as easy as doing it at college? I don't want to give up after my first year.

    Hi

I did Intermediate with Premier Training and Technician with FTC, both were OK but quite slow at replying to queries and marking practice papers and skills tests. With FTC they set a timtetable for you for the course and if for any reason you can't stick to it they charge you £30 for rescheduling. :(

I didn't do any of the course at college so I cannot say if it easier or not, but I would say you need to be very self disciplined as it is very easy to come home from work and decide not to do any studying. But it can be done.
    Best of luck

We have our own support tutors at www.eagle-education.co.uk, they are quick and the resources are good.

    Good luck

What about day release? I have heard that, but not had it confirmed, that some employers can get outside funding for this and might be willing to allow you to take that route.

I used the National Extension College (NEC)for Foundation and found the material provided as well as the tutor to be excellent.

If you are thinking of following this route you need the following:
    1. Somewhere to study. It can be difficult but when studying make that room is off-limits to the family.
    2. Study in short periods. You may be reading the material and doing the questions but you retain more if you study in small slots than in long hours.
    3. Get some postcards and jot down notes. Invaluable in the 'revision' period prior to exams when you are only refreshing what you have already learned.
    4. Make a study timetable. Add in breaks and treats. If the timetable is not working revise it.
    5. If the subject is not making sense leave it for an hour or day. Come back when you are refreshed.
    6. Highlight, doodle, flag. - if you are quickly flicking through the material your eye will quickly be drawn to what is important on that page.
    7. Use the forum and the tutor. Ask questions.
