Hi,
I need some help regarding EC VAT recalim.
My claient had an exhibition stand at an event in Germany for which he paid EUR3112 at 16% VAT.
Can I reclaim VAT back? if yes then how do I go about it?
I was thinking of claiming VAT back by filling in column 4 'VAT reclaimed in this period on Purchases and other inputs from EC' am I right to do this?
I look forward to hear from you.
many thanks in advance

Re:How to reclaim VAT from EC German state
You can, but it is not simple.
You need to complete a form in the language of the EU country (ie Germany) and submit it to them within a certain time span. They will then refund the VAT direct to your client in euros.
There are companies who specialise in reclaiming VAT from EU countries - for a fee/percentage.
Try google - I have never actually used one, so cannot recommend anybody.
There is also stuff on HMRC website about it.
Hope this helps.

Re:How to reclaim VAT from EC German state
In the past, when dealing with expenses paid in Eire( S.Ireland) we have always extracted the vat content and added it to the other box 4 figures. We have then shown the net cost in box 9.
By going on the web you can get the exchange rate for the day in question. This is the way we've operated it for three years and, to date, have had no come back.
If you are still not sure, then post the question on accountingweb.com

Re:How to reclaim VAT from EC German state
Oh dear.. claiming back EU VAT on your UK VAT return is a big no no.
You have to go through the procedure mentioned by Claudia. Don't do it yourself though, unless you are bilingual!
I have used a company called The VAT Clearing House before and they were very efficient.0 -
Re:How to reclaim VAT from EC German state
Thanks, Dean. This is how I had been instructed to do it before. I was instructed by a 35 years in accounts time expired failed ACCA, though. Must admit I did try to check it out on HMRC this afternoon, but it was down for maintenance( the rubber band must of snapped). It is something that I will check tomorrow because we have two clients that do a lot of work in the Irish Republic.
Thanks for putting me straight, you live and learn.

Re:How to reclaim VAT from EC German state
Just accessed the HMRC site this morning. VAT notice 723 refers to the method of claiming refunds. My apologies for giving incorrect information, this was due to listening to my seniors rather than investigating myself. I consider myself suitably admonished.
The moral of the story is, no matter what you are told, always, always investigate the relevant website. :oops:0 -

That does of course assume the Revenue's website is always correct!!
Tax is a mine field and VAT is the atomic bomb!!0
