I am fine with transferring the figures from the vairous ledgers onto the trail balance but when it comes to the list that they give you I always get it muddled up!
Does anyone else suffer this problem? Has anyone got a way I can remember it??

Re:I cant remember what goes where on the Trial Balance!!!
I completely fluffed this on the unit 3 skills test. Looked at the text book when I got home and could of kicked myself when I found out where I had gone wrong. But unlike my class mates I didn't get to do any unit 3 simulations due to being unable to college since half term. Read the text several times and had a go at the exercises but just didn't get it. But it could be that I did the ledgers on wrong side so got confused when transferring them to trial balance. I know I'll end up re-taking the skills test.0 -
Re:I cant remember what goes where on the Trial Balance!!!
A check that you could do is just to remember if money is owed, it goes on the credit side. So PAYE or NIC, as it is usually payable, would go on the cr side. A bank overdraft or loan again would be a credit. The Purchase Ledger Control Account, as it is money owed for purchases should go on the cr side. Capital, again represents funds owed to the owners of the business, would go on the cr side. Perhaps if you review where you have put your balances and consider whether the credit balances make sense. Then you could consider the logical progression of whether the debit balances make sense too. If someone owes the business money such as the Sales ledger Control Account or VAT, do you expect a refund, (dr) or do you expect to make a payment(cr).
There are lots of quick memory prods, DEADCLIC, ARELIP, PEARLS. It is just a matter of finding the one that has most relevance to you.
Best of luck.

Re:I cant remember what goes where on the Trial Balance!!!
even now on tehnician level if i have a mental blok on my debits and credits i start with sales and purchases as i found everything to follow from those otherwise on a similar debit and credit wg purchases are a debit therefore expenses are debits so money going out of the bank to pay theses expenses are credit
but like others above have said do what works for you and never worry if you need to draw up little T accounts to help yourself from getting lost in your rough workings0 -
